Wondering whether anyone has any experience of this.
We have a 9 year old and a 1 year old. They are lovely together most of the time. The 9 year old dotes on her baby sister, and is gentle and lovely with her. Dd2 is smiley and funny most of the time. However, she has times when she bites her big sister, slaps her etc. It tends to be when she's tired which obviously we deal with by encouraging a nap.
I feel awful for my 9 year old who was actually reduced to tears today as dd2 bit her so hard.
We have a very calm approach to parenting. Hitting and aggression isn't something she's witnessed at all and I really don't remember dd1 ever doing the same.
Any suggestions as to how to manage it? I'm hoping it's a phase that'll pass! She's off to nursery in September and I don't think they'll be impressed if she starts biting little ones!!

I haven't had a biter, but my DC3 went through a hitting phase from around 14 months. Like you I'd never experienced this with my older DC, so it took me completely by surprise. It is a phase and it will pass, but I'm sorry to say it may be a long one! DC3's went on for several months.

Your DD2 is too young for discipline really. Say NO firmly and remove her from the situation. Give your DD1 lots of cuddles and comfort (in case DD2 is doing it as an attention seeking behaviour). Eventually if it carries on you can introduce consequences etc. My DC3 usually hit other children, rather than his siblings, so "no hitting or we'll go home" (and following through if necessary) worked well from about 2 years.

Flowers remember it is a normal phase and not something you've done wrong!

Thanks for that. I've done what you suggest so far- put down dd2 if I'm holding her and go straight to dd1 to comfort her. I've actually gone as far as asking dd1 to "big up" the injury a bit to demonstrate that she's hurt her!
I feel sorry for dd1 to be honest as she's so lovely with her and desperate to be her favourite! I think it hurts her feelings when she bites etc bless her.
I do think there's teeth coming which doesn't help really.
