New baby, cold house

DS is nearly 4 weeks old . Our house can be bloody freezing in winter. Old house, out ch. Big rooms high ceilings.

I''m already worrying about winter. Day time we will be downstairs - i have a room with wood burner just off the kitchen and hope to use these two rooms as I can get it nice and cosy. Upstairs though rarely gets warm.

I have looked at gro bags but they only go to 2.5tog? If its a cold winter we have a 10tog duet, pj's, hot water bottle.......

How can I keep him warm overnight? I'm guessing he needs to be considerably older before he can sleep in our bed for warmth.

How cold is it? Ideal temperature for babies to sleep in is 16-20 degrees, according to our NCT teacher.

We took our baby camping he was 10 weeks old, temperature dipped to about 13 overnight and he loved it, slept right through. We layered blankets and covered his hands, he was only in a 2.5tog grobag.

2.5tog as a grobag is a lot warmer for them than it would be for us! Our house gets cold in the winter as its very poorly insulated, and DS was very small last winter. He was snuggly in his grobag. Downstairs in the day if its cold we just put on extra layers! This winter he's just about bug enough for a dressing gown. He'll be fine :)

Our bedroom went down to 6 degrees last winter. I had a 3.5 tog grobag, she was fine. She was in a sidecar cot though, so I was able to keep checking her temp. Sometimes I put a hat on her, sometimes brought her in with me (even when she was quite small). She now sleeps much better in cooler weather/in cooler rooms.

I'm not sure how cold, depends on what sort of winter we get and I've never had cause to check the temp before. I do know in the winters a few years ago it was bloody freezing.

Thanks goats I will probably get one of those, I've not seen a 3.5 before.

Jo Jo Maman do 3.5 tog sleeping bags with arms.

I would put socks on my babies hands if it was very cold.

We also have a very cold house in the winter - and hot in the summer! My baby's almost 2 now but she was a newborn in winter and came early and very small. We put her in our small room cos it would be easier to heat (she was in her own room from the start). When she was a baby that first winter we didn't have heating on in day (can't afford it on) it did go down to 12,13 a lot. Dress baby appropriately - I'd put her in long sleeved vests instead of short sleeved under her clothes. She was too small for a sleeping bag that winter so lots of blankets. At night we had a plug in heater for her room with a thermostat cos it's cheaper than central heating (and if we put central heating on it'd get too warm quickly then get too cold again) so did try to keep it 16 degrees at night. The next winter she was 1 so we worried less (bear in mind she was still the average size of someone half her age). Then we used 3.5 sleeping bag, didn't put heater on and only put heating on when we could afford it. Not very often unfortunately. You can see your breath in the house in winter and it gets way below 13 degrees now! I cannot stand winter she copes better than me.
