Hi there,
I have noticed Wam-bamboo nappies are popping up on tons of nappy websites, but I don't know much about the company.
I was wondering if anyone knew where they were made?

Hi there,
thanks, I did see that website, but I am also interested in where they are manufactured, and whether the nappies were actually made in the UK or elsewhere.

They aren't manufactured in the UK... I've forgotten where they ARE made though - I know I asked her a while ago.

Hi
They are manufactured in Portugal, I'm afraid it's becoming more normal for companies to get their products manufactured abroad to keep up with the increasing demand and because UK employment and other costs are so expensive.

There are now no major nappy companies solely manufacturing in the UK other than WAHM. Tots Bots still do some manufacturing in Scotland but have outsourced to Turkey.

Wham-Bamboo (wambamboo) nappies are made in ethical factories covered under EU regulations, unlike many others which are made in non-EU countries. The problem here is that without regulation, "free trade" rules apply - ie cheapest labour (potentially including children) and very poor conditions.

This is the same for just about everything you buy - which is why we're so passionate about Fair Trade as well as organics - but don't get me started on that rant.

Hi MAC, I remember a rumour circulating about Tots being made in Turkey - like Little Lambs.
So I emailed them and asked and they said all their manufacturing was done in Scotland. This was about five months ago, but it's pretty cheeky if they are misleading people like that. Have they started outsourcing recently, since that email do you know?

Hi Maisie,

Yes, it will be since then I should think. I can't just remember how long ago they advised retailers of the change but as many people know there's been a huge backlog in their production and this is, as I understand it, how they are dealing with it. They did emphasise that they are not scaling down production in Scotland, but just not growing it, either. I completely understand where they're coming from and admire them continuing to produce what they can in Scotland, but the fact is that from what they've told us retailers, they are manufacturing abroad.

That's been kept bit quiet... I know a lot of people use tots because they are UK made. I understand the reasons for needing to change, but I think it should be made more apparent.

maisiemog · 05/12/2006 00:12

I agree Flame, they shouldn't hide where their nappies are made, or at least they shouldn't mislead people. I can't believe they had no idea they were outsourcing when I contacted them, yet no mention of Turkey even when asked directly.
apparently if your label is made in the UK then you can sew it on a nappy made in a sweatshop in Taiwan and say 'made in the UK' on the label (because the label is).
