ds1, aged 5.2yo, has been prescribed glasses this week for slight short sightedness. what is life for kids with glasses like these days? do i need to be wary of bullying? and what are the practical issues i need to consider?

optician said he may end up with a high prescription eventually (poor kid has bad genes Confused (mine Blush) )

I have heard really good reports about Orthokeratology/Ortho-K - it's a system where you wear a gas permeable lens at night to reshape the eye and don't need to wear anything during the day. Apparently it is suitable for children from about 7 and is of course brilliant for sports. It also helps reduce the progression of myopia. I looked into it for myself but my astigmatism is too high but we will go down this route for my son. There are various opticians who fit the lenses around the country.

I was worried about this too as I'm v. Short sighted and worn glasses since 5. Luckily the nhs frames have moved on so much since my day! My ds started wearing glasses in R and it has never been commented on by the other kids. So many children in his class wear glasses.

Ds(6) has 2 very good friends who wear glasses and is always dissapointed when the optician says he doesn't need them. He's picked his frames and everything! I don't believe these little boys have had any teasing due to their glasses. I know their mums well enough to think I'd know if it was a problem.

No problems at all. DD has high prescription and wears them all the time. Had them for 4 years (since she was 3) and no breakages. The only issue I have had is a teacher that wanted her to remove them for PE- I had to explain that not wearing them means her sight is so poor she would be a liability to herself and others.
