ds problems and pain pooing

My 5 week DS has had real problems pooing for the last few weeks. He goes bright red, puts in loads of effort straining bless him but gets nowhere. This makes him really upset, he gets panicky, seems to have stomach pains, flails his arms and legs around, draws knees to chest then arches back and screams. The pedatrician has said is common and has advised us to give him a type of natural suppository, basically a camomile based liquid that we syringe into his bum which is brilliant and gets him pooing within minutes. When he does go he isnt constipated-issue is more he doesnt seem able to get it out himself! Am getting worried though as dont really want to give him this stuff more than once a day but today has been a mare. He wont be put down, is crying, seems in pain and yet he only had a dose this morn. Has anyone else had experience of this? Any advice or reassurances out there? Oh yeah-he has awful wind too.Spends most of day farting. Wakes himself up with it in the night.

Constipation is almost always due to insufficient fluid intake. (Not always, of corse, but generally.)
Presumably he's a bottle fed baby?
It doesn't sound 'common' for a Paediatrician to be giving a baby of this age a suppository! What other advice did he give?

Of course I can spell really!

He's breast fed although we do give him one formula bottle for his last feed. I know what you mean re suppository - am living in Italy and think the outlook on certain health issues are different to uk. I wouldnt call him constipated as such as when he does go it's liquidy as normal (tmi sorry). Dont know if its a form of colic!?

That sounds more likely to me. Why not start a new thread re: severe colic - no one else is replying on this one. Hope he improves soon

will do-thanks for replying.

Would it be worth leaving out the formula for a few days and see if it's that that is bothering him?

Funnily enough I flicked through ds1's 'Baby's first year' today. The 1st time he had formula he didn't do a poo for 4 days and was writhing and squealing in pain. So there could be a connection.
