Still pregnant, don't know where to ask stupid question! (buggy)

My stuff is starting to arrive. I have the Inglesina Stroller, as they call buggies in N. America, and it said it was suitable for newborns, but it is just some giant chair I could sit in myself. How does one put a very small baby (which I have not yet had) in something like that? Do you have to put a carseat in it, as I've heard people talk about carseats 'just snapping right in' - although I bet the one I have doesn't. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW ANY OF THIS STUFF WORKS! I don't know what anything is for! I don't know what to buy. People told me to buy stuff and I bought stuff, but this can't be right. Things I've seen in shops have all padding and stuff, I bought this on line, it's just like a buggy with a flat chair. Man, I've already screwed up, haven't I?

Don't worry. I have five prams - live and learn ... I bought the same buggy as you to take on holiday when my DS1 was 6mths as my other pram was just too big and heavy to take on holidays. If I knew what I was doing I would have just needed the one pram (my E3) which I naturally have purchased last and maybe a Maclaren stroller for the back of the car. When the manufacturers say suitable for newborn, it just means that the back can be fully reclined into a flat position. It just might mean that you have to make sure your baby is in the harness as there is no bassinette as such. Bugaboos are all the rage around here at the moment and I must say they do look great, especially for newborns, but they are very expensive. The reviews on here can be very useful for deciding what to buy and you can also do product searches to find out what people are saying. Don't be so hard on yourself though, it is perfectly normal to have no idea for the first one and the biggest risk is to buy all kinds of stuff you don't need or they grow out of before you use it or just doesn't suit your baby depending on the rate of development and personality. So long as baby has lots of love they couldn't care less about all the 'stuff'.

Hi, Aussie, thanks for the reassurance. A little more research tells me that you can get a bassinet/carrycot that fits onto it in the same make - the combined price now would let me buy a Bugaboo from the shop! Rather than pay shipping charges to get this from America! (I'm in Canada). I am comforted by your talk of five prams and will try not to bang my head against the wall, and the system, if I get it all, is going to work, but gosh, it's confusing. Thank you!

No help on this at all other than to tell you that we have had 4 strollers (travel system, buggy in the UK for when we visit the grandparents (we're in the States), a double for when I babysit & the cheapo umberella stroller I use most often).

Like you, it would have been cheaper just to buy the bugaboo which I refused because of the cost! Grrrr.

I rarely even use the strollers as I tend to stick DS in backpack carrier or sling.

I am sure your buggy will be fine for your LO. I've seen the Inglesina ones around and they look great

Don't worry! We've gone through around 5 prams/buggies too. Trouble is, you need a different one for different situations (easily foldable for crowded trains, big wheels for muddy off-road, skinny-fit for shopping etc etc). There's a lot of money to be made by someone somewhere! Anyway, just go with the one you've got, see what baby feels comfy in, and you can always get a secondhand carrycot/pram for the first few months if you feel baby needs to lie more flat.

NomDePlume · 19/11/2006 15:06

I had 9 buggies/prams for one child so you are deffo not the first person to make a mistake whilst buggy shopping.

CrocodileKate · 19/11/2006 15:10

It may not be a mistake though. Don't think there is any reason why you can't use the baggy with the back flat for a new born. How about one of the fleece liners to make it cosy?

misdee · 19/11/2006 15:14

to make it cosy for a new born try a baby snuggle.

If you feel your newborn looks too tiny and vulnerable in a pushchair you could always buy a sling to use until he/she is a bit bigger and more robust. The 'I need a re-enforced tank like vehicle for my precious newborn' stage is very short compared to the 'spare me from the tank like vehicle and get me a titchy stroller for the shops' stage. Personally I wouldn't buy anything for the newborn stage now that you've got a pushchair but that's just me! (I'm on my 4th pram btw)
