At what stage do you complain to school

DS is 6, nearly 7. He usually sees name calling etc as part of school life - but today he's complained boy X has been punching him in the shoulder and when he's told him he didn't like it, the boy called him a weako. I asked if he'd told a teacher and he said the playground assistant just laughed it off saying it was a joke. I know these things happen but surely if a child doesn't like another child doing something to him, especially when punching is involved, surely the classroom assistant should at least take it seriously? I've told him we'll see how it goes - but at what stage do you complain?

Going in guns blazing isn't going to help anyone. You need to go in and have a conversation not make a complaint. Be reasonable, listen but insist on action (even of in the first instance it is monitoring the situation).

Yes I was going to leave it but after a nice walk, I had an inconsolable child (this is the first time of him doing this) recalling this fight that happened where they were swinging him round by the arm. Unfortunately it's no clear what happened other than his friend ripped up another boys book and then expected my son to fight this other team. Instead he ran to get help (of which there was noone) so he went to playground assistant who said it was a joke! But he kept sobbing he was scared no one believe him, that he'd get into trouble, that he was a coward and that the other 'team' would come back and fight him again. Sheesh! Don't know what to do.

The playground assistant is completely failing in his/her duty and what is more mocking a child. Tell the school ASAP. They will want to know if they're any good! Angry

Yes that is how I feel. She is actually in her late 60s. Don't want to be age ist but concerned its cos she can't control them.
