Hand washing cloth nappies?

I am going on holiday in a few weeks time where I doubt there will be any washing machines.
I usually just take disposibles abroad but they always leak, especially at night.
I was thinking would it be possible to take a few fast driers with me like fluffles and just hand wash them? Would I be able to get them clean enough or does this just sound disgusting
I would probably only use them at night and wash them straight away so they wouldn't be festering in a nappy bucket as usual!
Should I use something to disinfect them a bit like napisan as the water obviously wouldn't be that hot with hand washing.

Hmmm... Does he normally poo in his night nappies?

If no poo, then I think put them in napisan in very hot water, and then handwash once it has cooled down, and it should be ok... How long are you going for?

How old is he? I've hand-washed nappies (pocket nappies with thin microfibre cloths to stuff, so they dried really quickly) on holiday before but that was with breastfed poo which did make it easier.

If you wear rubber gloves you can get the water even hotter.

I would use napisan or such like and just make sure they get a good hot washing machine wash when you get back.

You could use the disposable liners if you dont normally too.

We're going for two weeks. He normally poos first thing after his milk and is fairly reliable. Hand washing poo covered nappies would not be fun!
Thats a good idea to soak the nappy for a bit first in hot water, I could even boil the kettle.

Kettle and disposable liners sound like a good plan

My sister and I used to wear terry towelling nappies and we didn't have a washing machine until I was 15, so she must have hand washed them.

sorry xposts, he is 12 months and poo can be quite nasty! disposible liners might be safer just incase.

You could always consider EC (Elimination Communication) ;-)

What about wraps over the disposables. You will be on holiday. They will be easier to wash .

hairymclary · 06/11/2006 21:48

I can't see why not. I usually wash my nappies at 30 degrees anyway so i shouldn't worry about the water not being hot enough

alfiesmum · 07/11/2006 10:26

Thanks all, I will give it a go then.
Just wanted to make sure there were no horrified gasps and you didn't think that I was a nutter!
