Bambino Mio reusables - will they feel wet and cold once soiled???

I am about to start using reusable Bambino mio nappies on my breastfed 6 week old girl and just realised i hadnt really thought about how they will feel for her. Surely they will feel wet and cold once soiled either by number 1's or 2's? I have checked bambino mio website to see how to fold the inner prefold and they dont show 'the loose stool fold' being used with a liner? Will the liner make a difference and if so how do i add it? Has anyone found these bring about nappy rash? Do they make a baby uncomfortable once wet?

The baby's own bodyheat + the waterproof liner keeps the wet nappy warm (it isn't cold when you take it off, anyway).

Surely you change them once a stool is in there, so doesn't matter if that's slightly uncomfortable, it's no worse than poo'ing in a disp?

A liner goes between the absorbent nappy and the baby's bottom. Unless you like rinsing nappies off in the toilet (friend is okay with that, but I am not). You can get flushable liners, or reusable liners.

Rash: best way to treat is airtime and frequent changes, regardless whether you use disp or cloth. Nappy rash creams mostly sell to disposable users. (Not because disps are worse than cloth, but because most babies are in disps.)

Hi,

Cloth nappies feel softer against the skin than horrid plastic, chemically, paper nappies - so they should be much nicer! As flack says, body heat keeps the nappy warm anyway.

Bambino Mio (and other prefolds) aren't so good at stopping leaks as shaped nappies, though, so if you don't get on with them don't think all cloth nappies are the same!

With breastfed babies you may find that you actually don't need a liner, but it does make handling dirty nappies easier. Some people find fleece works better with breastfed babies as BF poo is really runny, and soaks through the liner keeping the skin drier.

Any nappy is uncomfortable when wet - cloth is no different - the only answer is to change the nappy.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on!

i have taken the plunge and started today. I always normally change her after hearing or smelling poos so thats not a problem. thy are a little bulky and u cant tell when they need changing as u can with disp's (they fill out) not that thats a real problem either as she gets changed regularly anyway but its tempting to want to keep checking and change after every little wee now that shes in reusables. ive got a feeling that i will prob change her a little more than when in disp's. otherwise im looking forward to all the benefits:

  • not having to carry out umpteen nappies to the bin every day
  • buy and transport large packs of nappies from the shops
  • have an overflowing bin with no room for rubbish
  • £30 cashback from local council
  • helping the environment
  • saving money on disp's

thanks for comments so far

I've just started using cloth too, and I find it works for me if I change every 2.5 to 3 hours, because I found the exact same thing that the cloth nappies don't feel heavy and wet in the same way as disposables.

My nappies have got fleece, and the liquid poo is absorbed much better then with disposables. and I've been told that you can make your own fleece liners by cutting up an old fleece jacket

Fleece liners are my faves. Very soft and keep baby's bum really dry, even when they've been in a nappy for a long time. No need to change more often that disps. You'll get used to them and I'm confident you won't go back to disps.

GHayles,my set of nappies have seen to both of my children and my two nephews.

How smug do I feel?????

there are various folds here for prefolds which I found made prefolds better for breastfed, v small babies

get yerself a pack of nappy nippas and try these perhaps if you do get leaks - I found the angel fold the best

I did get the odd leak but nothing compared to the devastation that disposables caused whenever I used them on weekends away

fleece liners definitely - when you choose your fold you can cut a cheap fleece blanket up so that they fit your nappies perfectly - make sure none of the fleece or nappy is peeking out of the wrap

cheapest fleece blanket you can find; it's the cheapest way of doing it

good luck and come back for more help whenever you need it.
