Advice please- nasty nappy rash

Hi there,

Poor dd has all of a sudden developed a quite sore-looking nappy rash. She's 10.5 weeks old. Have been planning to switch to 'real' nappies eg totsbots- will this help? Am already careful not to leave her dirty, dry thoroughly and use sudocrem. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks.

Antipesol (sp?) is really good for bad rash. Any chemist should have it.

Sudocream can sometimes be a bit too heavy unless spread really thin and in the early weeks. Try Drapolene - its a much lighter pink coloured antiseptic nappy rash cream. Also 'Airtime' as I call it. I try and get my DD as much airtime as possible although it usually only ends up being one 15 minute session a day. I have also found wipes can contribute. Some are softer than other - I find pampers and johnsons softer than another leading brand and sensitive ones are best. Its a case of trying them all. I tried all 3 top leading brands and found pampers to work for my daughter. Also I found major differences in the disposable nappies. Pampers seemed to be far supperior than others as it seemed to absorb the yellow runny poo much better whereas with other brands it would just sit there in a puddle. Hope this helps and apologies for my rambling. I am about to start using reusable bambino mios.

I used to use kamilosan [sp] i found it helped the most, also good for you if you have sore nipples.

Hiya,

If the nappy rash is like little red spots or not starting to get better by tomorrow it's worth checking with your doctor or HV as it may be a thrush infection.

Wipes often irritate skin as they are usually wetted with alcohol which is drying. You can get wipes which aren't, such as Ellie Smellie or some organic ones which are nice. Often these are wetted with aloe vera. If possible, though, just use cotton wool and water, or consider using washable wipes and water which you can throw in the wash with your nappies. You can buy special wipes squares, or just cut up an old towel!

I would avoid creams unless baby is sore - you really don't need them all the time.

Personally, I think that using cloth nappies such as Tots Bots is better for the skin, and my favourite is bamboo, eg Tots Bots Bamboozles or Wham-Bamboos as they are naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, so great for helping to stop nappy rash.

The very best thing is nappy off time, of course - so let your baby kick on a washable play mat or several folded towels for as long as possible during the day - this really makes a difference.

Just keep an eye on her now, though, as nappy rash can get worse very, very quickly.

My dd has just had the same but she is 9.5 months, i have been to the doctors & was told that things like sudocrem do not work when babies actually have the nappy rash because it is a barrier cream this is to prevent nappy rash, you need to use something that is actually for nappy rash, i was told the best thing to use is Metanium cream it is like a yellow paste fantastic stuff & dd is now clear of nappy rash.
Hope it gets better soon x
