Nitty gritty comb or chemical warfare?!!

I have read several comments on nits which say that using a nitty gritty comb only adds 5 minutes to a normal hair wash.
Whaaaaat?! It takes me about 45 mins to do one child's head, and I have four of them to do. Maybe I am slow because my daughters have long (but fine) hair, and maybe I am slow because I am paranoid about getting every hair, but seriously, five minutes?! And then they say you should do this every two days?! Any life I have would totally disappear.
So, utterly fed up that my kids have had nits for three weeks and I can't seem to get rid of them, what is my next step. The pharmacist says Vamousse - anyone tried it? Still have to comb, sigh, but hopefully getting the little suckers where it hurts at the same time.
Oh - any advice on combing v gratefully received. How do you 'section the hair'? Do you go front to back, left to right, do I need to comb their eyebrows?! I need them GONE. Yeuch.

Joking about the eyebrows… but actually wondering if all the creepy crawlies don't hang out there giggling, while I am spending hours combing the head…
I am so sure I have got them all, but three days later, there they are again….

I've tried vamousse and found little buggers still alive when combing it through afterwards. I think I've finally got them all, but the only thing that really worked was combing it through every 3 days. Dd1 has long thick hair, and it takes me well over an hour to do her, let alone the other 5. But it really was the only way to get rid of them

Get some chemicals on it. Hedrin or similar. Apply to dry hair. Leave overnight. Repeat after 7 days. Job done.

wow, totally different opinions! Have had husband smother me in Vamousse as i sit here - more hard work than I thought…
It says on the packet that you need to vacuum all your sofas, carpets, boil wash all bedding, clothing, hats, teddies, soak brushes, throw away towels etc, argh, I thought that was all a myth?

Five minutes my arseHmm

You may be missing some of the eggs, that would explain re appearance after a couple of days. So you need something that will get rid of the eggs attached to the hair shaft at the base, literally half a hair's breath off the scalp. I use vinegar as it dissolves the substance they secrete to glue the egg shells onto the hair.

It needs careful application because it runs just like water and you really don't want it getting their eyes. So sit them with their head back, towel on the shoulders and another held above the eyes. Saturate the hair with any old cheap vinegar, wrap in a towel/plastic of some sort and leave for 30 mins being combing thoroughly.

Usually I mix it with olive oil as that kills the adults and it also stops the vinegar running as much.

Good luck

Nitty gritty comb, without a doubt.
Lots of cheap conditioner and away you go.

I suppose the length of time it takes depends more on the length of hair and how much hair there is than anything else.

Chemical warfare never worked for us, comb does every time.

You know you have to repeat every couple of days to get all juvenile lice and eggs before they get a chance to lay again?

PacificDogwood · 22/04/2015 23:15

The washing and hoovering advice is rubbish AFAIK

AdoraBell · 22/04/2015 23:17

Sorry, for sectioning I divide left/right then work on one side at at time.

Try to work on about a square inch. I bought cheap hair grips like hairdressers use to keep the hair in place while I concentrate on one section. Start sectioning from the top down, then treat/comb from the bottom up.

Scrounger · 22/04/2015 23:23

I blasted them with Hedrin and then kept combing. I used the nitty gritty comb, tea tree conditioner and used hairdresser grips like AdoraBell. I then blasted with Hedrin 5/6 days later. Pincer movement on the buggers.

Haggisfish · 22/04/2015 23:24

Hedrin gel is good-leave on for a couple of hours just to make sure and nitty gritty comb out. Repeat once a week for three weeks.

wheresthelight · 23/04/2015 06:25

chemical warfare to start and then comb with normal nit comb every other day. headrin do a spray gel and it is brilliant and trust me my dsc's come every week with the little bastards because their mum refuses to treat or manage.

BigSmilesCheesyPie · 23/04/2015 06:51

The thing that I have learnt about nit/lice is that what one person swears by won't work for another person, its really frustrating!

I can use Lyclear the boys hair but Headrin won't work, neither product works on DDs hair as it is very fine and the nits cling to the very fine hair at the side.

In the end, out of desperation and on recommendation from a friend I covered DDs hair in Listerine mouth wash, wrapped her hair in cling film and left it on for an hour (she love it, not!). It got rid of them all.

One they are gone, during school time I used the Vosene nit repellent shampoo and always keep her hair up when at school.

Thirstysomething · 24/04/2015 17:35

Not sure Vamousse is working :(
Going to try Listerine on dd's v fine hair, thanks for the tip!

We did both, chemicals every 7 days and comb throughs in between. Took at least a month to completely clear them of all walkers, not sure were they from eggs we missed ( found it impossible to see the eggs) or jumpers...

My head is still scratchy!

Cedar03 · 27/04/2015 07:03

We do hedrin plus combing to combat it. I do the combing in the bath. But remember that they'll be picking them up from friends at school - so this last term I treated, combed, treated, combed, thought it was clear then found an adult crawling in there. I'm convinced that they were getting on there from someone else in her class each time I cleared her hair as this is the first time I've kept finding the adults after treatments.
