Oh the shame...

Took dd (2.1) to the Drs this evening, and while in the waiting room my dh and I were playing silly games to keep her amused during the long wait. DH did something and she said "silly Daddy, silly bugger!" We were both aghast as she's never said it before (although probably heard it from me ). I told her she wasn't to say that as it was a naughty thing to say and then she said it again... and again and again. The more people around us giggled, and the more I shussed and blushed, the more she said it and the louder she got until I took her to the toilets to calm her down.
SO embarrassed! Not so much about the fact that she was screaming SILLY BUGGER at the top of her lungs , but that she heard it from me and I'm not a very good example.

Oh dear.

it could have been worse, try not to worry about it and distract her next time she starts cussing

Found the best thing to do with DS in those situations is to employ one paddington bear hard stare and not draw attention to it. By responding is drawing attention to the word and it now provokes a reaction and DKs at that age just love pushing our buttons. Kids are just learning new words and they soak up stuff like sponges.

We were in the Clifton Hotel for a weekend in Scarborough when DS was just over 2. it was full of very middle aged, middle class tweedy types, ex WW2 Service men on reunions, that type. We are mid working class oiks in comparison. Anyway, we're in our room in the evening, watching telly, DS in a travel cot and through the dark we hear DS merrily saying 'bollocks, bollocks bollocks' We were amused and horrified at the same time and I was so worried that this would be repeated at breakfast. Pleased to say it was never repeated. I know if we had made something out of it, he'd have said it all weekend.

But I understand you feeling mortified, especially when it's happened somewhere so public, If the 'bollocks' thin had happened anywhere but in our room I would have been in the same boat as you.

Big hug for you

Today DS was going round Tesco shouting at the top of his lungs 'BOGOF BAGELS', he set off another toddler and his mum just glared at me like I was the worst parent in the world. Ho hum

I did inform him thatt this week's offer was Buy One Get One Free prawns but the bagels have stuck.

Kids are great aren't they!

Hi Bibi - how are you?

If it helps, ds said "oh shit" the other day

fransmom · 04/11/2006 20:52

we had the shit thing! luckily it's not too clear now and we try and turn into sheep or ship depending on where we are (not sure if anyone believes us tho)

ds is nearly 2 and not really speaking yet, but picks and chooses the words he does use very carefully. Yesterday in the car on the way out I said to dh something like "well that pissed on his chips did't it!" then realised what I had said, made a "eek hope he didn't hear that" face and thought no more of it. In the bank 10 mins later ds starts chanting "piss..piss..piss..piss..piss....."

aarghh

Bibiboo · 06/11/2006 18:19

SO relieved to hear it's not just my child. I knew deep down they all do it to some extent, but it's nice being reassured!

Fransmom, love turning sh*t into sheep, must try that when dd progresses onto class A swear words!

Hey Bean, not too bad, yourself?

I think it is best to ignore it the bigger issue you make the more she will say it. Recently I was at a bus stop and a woman kept using the 'F' word and ds repeated it, I ignored him and he has never used it again. However yesterday I dropped his lunch all over the floor pasta and sauce splattered all up the walls and everything and I said "oh shit". Ds repeated it again and again I was ignoring him at first but after he had said it 20 times I said "Oh mummy was naughty to say that word don't say it again" This was the worst thing I could have done as he kept repeating it all day and when I put him to bed he was talking to himself as normal and said "oh shit oh shit Mummy says naughty word I gonna say oh shit I like it!"
