Just started using cloth - have a few questions...

I have been given some secondhand reusable nappies - they are the "pocket" type. Most are fuzzbunz (medium) and another brand called lollipop. Ds2 is 14 weeks and weighs 16 pounds, and is breastfed.

Questions:

  • seeing as both brands have fleece on the inside (against the skin) do I need extra liners? (was also goven some disposable liners, but haven't been using them)
  • was also given some tea tree oil, and was told just to put a few drops in the washing machine drawer instead of washing powder. Is this okay?
  • if I am washing them as above, do I presoak them in the nappy bucket?
  • have been getting a bit wet overnight, despite using two boosters. Any tips to stop leaks?
  • can I buy terry nappies and fold them into boosters?
  • could I also use terries to make a shaped nappy, then use the pocket nappy as a wrap? (thinking this may help at night)
  • if I did this I would need a liner, wouldn't I?
  • can you make fleece liners out of an old fleece jacket, or is the fleece different?

There we go Someone should make a "cloth nappies for dummies" guide.

BTW I am really enjoying using cloth nappies...so far!

  1. No, you don't need an extra liner.

  2. Not heard that before, and I wouldn't want to do it. I use about 1/4 the amount of powder recommended for a normal wash (I use surcare), and some vinegar in the conditioner drawer.

  3. I don't presoak - just give an extra rinse cycle before washing. You can sprinkle some tea tree in the nappy bucket though.

  4. Different nappies for bedtime (I have heard about fuzzis for bedtime leaks before). I use wambamboos with a mother of eden booster for night and a wool wrap

  5. Yes, but they would be a bit bulky - microfibre cloths from tesco work better and are smaller.

  6. Could do, but you'd be better off with an actual wrap I think.

  7. Yup, that'd need a liner.

  8. Yes, cut up as many jackets as you want

How's that???

I like the idea of writing a "cloth nappies for dummies"... d'you think anyone would buy it from me????

And the microfibre cloths - are those the cleaning ones?

Oh, and would I have to hem the fleece if I cut up and old jacket or two?

You can buy a value pack of white microfibre cleaning clothes from Tesco's, and you wouldn't need to hem the fleece, just cut to what shape you like.
