What did your baby wear? I'm struggling to work out what's the right amount of clothes for my pfb in this heat! Thanks

The advice I was given (at NCT classes) was one more layer than you, whatever the weather, when they're little.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 15/04/2015 07:20

If I followed the 1 extra layer rule my DD would overheat! She is a little hottie and I feel the cold.
Yesterday I was in skinny jeans, t shirt and a cardi when out. DD was in just dress and nappy indoors, tights and cardi when we went out.
OP try light layers that you can add or remove if you're unsure. Feel their chest or back to check they're warm enough (hands and feet will generally be chillier than the rest of their body and that's ok.) just like adults will wear different amounts, babies may need different amounts.

My HV said the extra layer is only the rule for cool weather and it should be one fewer layer in hot weather. basically they can't regulate their temperature when they are little.

The advice I mentioned is on this page:

www.nct.org.uk/parenting/babycare-basics

Obviously, the important thing is to actually check your baby yourself and add/remove layers as necessary. The advice I mentioned is just a very basic and simple starting point.

One more layer if it's colder than indoor room temp. Room temp they should have the same as adults, I was advised? And no hats indoors.
So on a very sweaty day, don't force a cardigan on them if you're baking in a tshirt. Especially not in a car seat!

I test by feeling the chest and back of the neck - should be nicely warm but not hot/clammy. Today mine is in a light vest, tshirt and leggings and a sun hat. I will take a cardie too just in case.

At my hv clinic they're always reminding us not to OVER wrap babies ... The coat AND pram suit AND 2 hats AND cosy toes you often see is excessive bar mid winter.

Mine is 6 months. When she was "new" in Sept she wore just a suit or even a vest indoors when it was this hot. Vest, suit, Cardigan, hat outdoors when breezy.

Thanks everyone. He's not so new - 5 months but first real spell of hot weather. I think I find it difficult to gauge because when we are outside we are often walking and our bodies are in the sun so we feel hit but they are inactive in their prams in the shade.

My three week old DD is wearing a vest, a tunic dress type thing and leggings, I've been checking her chest temp obsessively all day worrying she's too hot but she feels fine.
