Big booboo @ placement

Feeling low @ the moment. Having trouble with self confidence on my placement on the labour ward: turn in a gibbering wreck at the slightest hint of trouble (am student midwife) and then today I've learned that I've missed an important thing on a baby that I've checked and that there's a complaint made. I'll never make a good midwife

Oh I am sorry BB what year are you in?

Its so hard being a student isn't it, difficult position to be in (i am a student nurse) what is happening now has the uni been contacted? What did the uni say?

I'm in y3, worse of all and I really need to get it cracked to get my competencies signed off. Not sure what my personal tutor will say. My mentor said that it's just one of those things that happens to all of us. She's very nice about it, but obviously it can't be ignored.

Belgianmama, every student(and indeed qualified person) will have times when they make an error of judgement,it is called being human.Your mentor sounds supportive.Even if you were left in charge of your own group of patients you would not be ultimately responsible as your mentor is the qualified person.I am sure you will make a lovely caring midwife. The thing that you missed has been picked up by someone and acted upon, and I am sure sorted out.At the end of the day you are a STUDENT and still learning.Chalk it down to experience and mug up on that particular subject if you can.I think it is one of the hardest things in a person centred job as you worry how you affect peoples lives.Do you have a tutor who you could discuss it with?Big virtual hugs

Oh belgianmama you poor thing, it must be a really stressful time for you. I don't think that ultimately you should be responsible, as you should have been supervised. If you're in your 3rd year, you are already a good midwife, please don't think otherwise from this bad day. Give yourself a break- hope things seem better in the morning

Thank you for your kind words. I am writing it down to experience and it has definitely been another learning experience too. It's just that the minute my self confidence finally started to grow, something like this knocks it right back down. I've only got a few weeks left to prove myself on delivery suite and it is not going the right way at the moment.
