DH and I moved to rural Wales under a year ago and shortly afterwards I found out I was pregnant. Have been attending Welsh classes since then as DC will be schooled in Welsh but my vocabulary is still very limited. DS has arrived and I'm only speaking English to him (okay he doesn't understand anything yet but I think exposure helps). Could you give me any phrases in Welsh that I can use with my baby to get him used to the sounds? Just the usual stuff you end up cooing to a baby:- "ooh, what a dirty nappy", "what a good boy", "is somebody hungry?", "it's bed time" etc...would be most appreciated!!

Are you living north or south?

I am living in mid Wales, just above Powys...I think quite a lot of 'Northern' Welsh is spoken here

In all honesty I wouldn't worry too much about it. I am bilingual but my parents never spoke Welsh to me. The only phrases it seemed natural for me to say to DD in Welsh were things like:
Cariad Bach
Mae Mami'n day garu ti
Da iawn cariad
Pwy sy'n babi bach ddel?

Now DD is 2 and knows 1-10 in Welsh, a few phrases and the odd word here and there. She'll be starting Cylch Meithrin next week for 2.5 hours a week and it usually helps them come on in leaps and bounds. We also take her to Cylch every week, where parents stay, which she loves and is learning songs and simple phrases.

Have a listen to the tracks on this page - you can order the CD. Twf might have "Amser Twf sessions in your area - those would help. Pob lwc! www.:twfcymru.com/yourtoolkit/resources/twfsongs/twfsongscd1/?lang=en

One thing I remember people saying a lot in Wales was "Beth sy'n bod?" What's the matter? You could also teach him single words for things as you learn them.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. That gives me a great start...

I met a Twf representative during an antenatal appointment so I'll make some enquiries about the amser Twf sessions. Diolch!

There's a Welsh speakers/learners thread on MN somewhere you could join in with.
