When did your baby/child go into a "real" bed

And out of their cot? Did you have to put a stair gate on their door?

Really, really old Grin She was nearly 3 when we took the sides off, I kept waiting for her to climb out but she never did so in the end we just took it off one day as 3 was starting to see a little old!

If they're not bothered by the cot, they fit, they sleep well, they're not climbing out, you can lift them in and out, and you don't need the cot for another baby, I personally don't see a huge reason to rush it.

Didn't put a stairgate on the door as she can't open the door, but if she could I think we might have.

Moved from a cotbed to a standard single at 2.5 - only because we moved house, like Thurlow he'd have been in the cotbed until he climbed out/became unhappy if we hadn't moved.

Dd was nearly 2 as she had a sibling on the way, ds1 was 18 months as he too had a new sibling and ds2 was 3 as the cot was being passed to a baby cousin.

2years and 2 months when DS2 arrived. He had a bed guard on the side though so that he didn't roll out and a stair gate on his door.

He settled very quickly.

Purpleflamingos · 10/04/2015 12:26

Ds was just over 12 months. He was a climber, plus I was pregnant and it was starting to get harder to bend over the cot to lay him down. He went into a cot bed for another year then a full sized single.
Dd was 2years when we took the sides off the cot and turned it into a cot bed. 20 months down the line she is only just in a full sized single but would have been happy in the cot bed longer if we had left her (we went bed shopping for her brother one weekend and she fell in love with a white wrought iron bed).

Purpleflamingos · 10/04/2015 12:27

Oh, no stair gates but then I co-sleep if they come in wanting cuddles.

elQuintoConyo · 10/04/2015 12:31

DS will be going in his in June. He'll be 3.5. So far we have been co sleeping, so fingers crossed for a smooth transfer I doubt that very much

Piratejones · 10/04/2015 12:32

almost 5

BeansInBoots · 10/04/2015 12:42

Dd is 2.4 and I have no plans on taking the sides off any time soon! She's in a cot bed, so not the end of the universe. Thinking about getting ds (8mo) his own cot bed soon, he still fits in his Moses atm!

GothicRainbow · 10/04/2015 12:48

DS is almost 2 and we have no plans to move him yet. He is showing no inclination to climb out the cot. The only thing that will force our hands is when he begins to outgrow the cot as its a standard size and not a cot bed. We have a toddler bed in the loft waiting for when we have to do the switch.

Those who have already done the move, do you have any tips that helped with the transition?

We will be putting a stairgate on DS's door as he can open them.

speak2me · 10/04/2015 12:52

DS1 went into cot bed at 2 and single bed at 2.4 (DS2 needed the cot 2 months later). Stair gate put across at night but not for naps, and no bed guards. He's fallen out a few times but we have had pillows the floor next to the bed for a few months.

Dd1 was about 15 months as we needed the cot for dd2. Dd2 was about 10 months when we finally figured out she hated the cot and slept much better in a bed. Both had bed rail but no stair gate.

MimsyBorogroves · 10/04/2015 15:13

DS1 was 2.5, DS2 was 2. We only moved DS2 over so early because we bought DS1 a mid sleeper and had nowhere to store the single bed, so thought we may as well bite the bullet and move DS2 over there and then.

pickwickcrocus · 10/04/2015 15:16

3 years 3 months. She was very happy in her cot and could climb in and out as needed, we didn't bother taking the side off.

We do have a stair gate but that's because its a loft room, with steep stairs. Wouldn't have worried about it otherwise I don't think. She had to move rooms to accommodate our bump, and we wanted to do it well in advance of baby arriving, so she didn't feel ousted, which I think we have managed so far !

Paddingtonthebear · 10/04/2015 15:22

Our 2 and a half year old is still in her cot bed with the sides up, and still sleeps in a gro-bag. She seems as happy as Larry and sleeps 12 hours a night so we are not in a rush to convert to the bed yet Grin

JustAQuicky · 10/04/2015 15:31

1 Smile went from a cotbed to a double bed

YY to the stairgate still has one now at 3 however it's left open all the time so could most likely come off now

LittleLionMansMummy · 11/04/2015 08:03

He went into a cotbed at 2 and into a standard single at 4.

drspouse · 11/04/2015 08:15

Sides off cot bed at about 20 months? Maybe 22? Just younger than 2 anyway.
We still have the stairgate up at 3 as there are too many places he could go and open doors, even leaving aside coming in to wake us up, his room is right next to the bathroom and there are steep attic stairs that we can't fit a gate over.
We don't shut it for naps every single day but if we don't he tends to shut it himself and then get cross!
He shares a room with DD so when the side comes off her cot we'll need it up so no point in taking it down anyway.
The plan is for bunks at 6 (youngest safe age). and I'm pretty sure he'll still fit in his toddler bed then, and thankfully DD is not too lanky so should be OK in the Ikea cot without the side.

drspouse · 11/04/2015 08:21

(I'm hoping they won't complain TOO much after that about sharing - as the best plan after that is the attic bedroom for DS but I'd really think of that when he's about 10 = the stairs are bad and I and my brother shared till then and I then moved up to the attic in the same way).

Graceymac · 11/04/2015 13:35

2yrs 8 months. Cotbed with sides up to double bed. I was very tired of dd standing in cot and crying each morning. She was well able to climb out too, just chose to wake us in that way each morning. I took the stair gate down as my dds climbed over the top which was even more dangerous than falling down the stairs!
