PFB and protecting from sun

I really don't know how much is enough, or too much, sun protection in this sunny spring weather for my 7 month old PFB. If we are outside, but not in the shade, do I need to put suncream on her in this weather? She's fair skinned. Should she wear tights to protect her legs from the sun or will she be too hot? I have no idea!

No tights! Let her enjoy cool legs and arms in summer clothes. If she is in the sun she needs a sunhat and yes, sunscreen. I avoid sunscreen like the plague as I think they are very unhealthy for everyone so I would advise keeping her in the shade instead but if she us crawling away that is more difficult so she needs sunscreen during the day if you are out in it.

Great thread. Keen to hear too.

We went out yesterday and put sun cream on our one year old. We also bought her a sunhat but she kept flinging it on the ground.
When she was tiny we used to peg a large muslin onto the pram to provide some extra shade.

Straw hats are pretty good as they seem to be harder to grab off. Lots of suncream and a little sun suit? Although my pfb had a cracking tan last year!

I let my toddler have some sun on his skin, about half an hour, then put sunscreen on. They need sun exposure for vitamin d! But always a hat and make sure you have regular shade breaks. Let her arms and legs be free!

we have stopped putting tights on DD now, its been warm this week. we haven't used sun protection yet as we don't feel she was out long enough to need it nor is she out at the warmest time of the day in it. I only think its needed if you are out all day in it without any shade and the sun is strong.

Remember they need a minimum of 20mins sun a day without sun screen to prevent rickets which has become increasingly common.

Droflove · 10/04/2015 11:25

Also be careful of sunscreens. Even children's ones are not suitable for babies under 1 usually. They are so so unhealthy but if you must use one, go for one that says suitable for babies under 1 in the small print.

MrsBojingles · 10/04/2015 12:17

Why are sunscreens unhealthy?

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 10/04/2015 13:16

My PFB is 9 months. I've bought sun cream but not used yet as not been out long enough. I'm still keeping her in long sleeve tops and trousers at the moment, (still in winter wardrobe, her summer clothes don't fit!) and put a sun hat on to walk the dog.
She is white blonde and very fair skinned so I don't want her getting burnt!

squizita · 10/04/2015 14:04

YY to 20-30 min moderate sun. Very important! Smile

And make sure sunscreen is suitable for babies. It's powerful stuff especially on sensitive skin... There are many "sensitive" ones I can't use as an adult!

H&M have the cutest summer hats in stock btw! Grin

olivesnutsandcheese · 10/04/2015 23:49

agree with H & M having cute sunhats.
DS's first summer he had one from there - had ties on it so you can tie under their chin and can't take it off.

Droflove · 11/04/2015 00:01

Can't remember what the active ingredient is to block the sun and I don't want to scaremonger when I can't remember the details of what I read when ds was little but even sunscreens themselves say on the bottle suitable from 1 yr+ etc. I personally don't want anything on my child ever that is not suitable for babies.

I bought a pop up sun tent for dd at this age.
