High chair recommendation

DS is 8 months but is tiny, he's still in 3-6 months clothes and on the 9th percentile.
His high chair is ridiculous, I've bought a seat liner but it's still massive, the straps are as tight as they can go but he can still his arms out and he slumps right down and doesn't really reach the tray. It's the mothercare pears one.
We're trying to encourage self feeding so I really do need him in a high chair. Tried the bumbo with the tray on but he just wriggles around and it's a nightmare so straps are needed!

Anyone recommend a better one? I don't really want to spend much more than £60ish if possible

I have used the ikea antilop with DS since he was 6 months and I think it's fab. You can get an inflatable cushion for it which keeps him upright, plus it has a bar between the legs which I think is invaluable to prevent slumping. And it's a bargain at less than £20 including the cushion.

Ikea antilop

A second hand tripp Trapp my son who I have to admit is big for his age but has been in it since he was 3 months. They are brilliant and last forever as they grow with the child. They also don't take over your room and push right up to the table so they feel involved in family meals. We think it is our best ever baby purchase well worth the money.

The ikea antilop is good, we've used those before but am I right I'm thinking they don't collapse? I need one that I can fold down to keep out the way if possible...

Thank you Smile

Ikea Antilop doesn't fold, but the legs screw on/off, and the chair part is actually quite small once legs are off. It's a fab highchair, and dishwasher safe (not that we have one Angry)

tortoisesarefab · 09/04/2015 18:03

My niece has the mamas and papas snug seat, she still uses it now at 2. It's nested like a bumbo but has straps and attaches to a dining chair

Ilovenannyplum · 09/04/2015 20:36

Dishwasher safe?!
Would anyone really put a high chair seat in a dishwasher?

Yep, we were putting ikea antilop into dishwasher - it's brilliant! We moved to second hand trip trap when DS was just over 2 - but I wouldn't have used it earlier, as it is nightmare to clean all the grooves and weaning and self-feeding is messy! Ikea antilop was perfect for that - small, light and easy to clean, whether by hand or dishwasher (which we used only occasionally). And cheap!

Ilovenannyplum · 09/04/2015 20:56

I think I need to go to ikea Smile
and buy some more dishwasher tablets!

Also recommend the ikea one, and the legs pop off easily so it's quite small.

blackkat1978 · 10/04/2015 00:27

I would also recommend the Ikea antilop. I bought mine very cheap second hand & used a cushion to push 1st my daughter & now my son forward. We put the tray in the dishwasher regularly but the main chair part less often. As its plastic it's very easy to wipe down (or hose down in the shower!)

BossWitch · 10/04/2015 00:32

Yep, ikea Antilop all the way. It's great for getting them into a really upright, straight seating position. The legs come off in an instant and the actual seat and tray are small enough to pop out of the way.

Florin · 10/04/2015 03:51

I have never had any issue cleaning the tripp trapp and he was BLW from 5 months so lots of mess. My son loves it as from just over a year he has had the baby bit off so he feels grown up sitting in a big boy chair but he is still sitting comfortably at the right height. We also own 3 Blush antlops (one at each grandparents and one at our holiday house). I do agree they are easy to clean but they are seriously ugly, they take up lots of room (you really wouldn't want to take off the legs regularly). The angle of the legs seems to catch everyone out and everyone seems to trip over it especially my poor dear father!

Piffyonarockbun · 10/04/2015 10:13

my dd had the antilop from 6 months and she is between the 2nd and 9th centile. size wise its always been great. i have a tiny house but the antilop fits fine even though it doesnt collapse. i went to buy another one last week (for a friend) and they are now £9 for the chair itself and £4 for the optional tray Shock . bargain!!

knittingbee · 10/04/2015 16:37

I have a Tripp Trapp and found it a nightmare to clean, plus actually quite dangerous as the seat seems to come out of its slot v easily. Used it for DS who was a chunky baby but didn't bother getting it out for DD.

DD is in a Cosatto high chair with a tray, got secondhand for a fiver, and it's much better than the Tripp Trapp IMO. She's much daintier than her brother and has been using it since about 6/7 months. The Tripp Trapp is very open, which may not be suitable for smaller babies, IYSWIM –a high chair with closed sides and a tray has been much more suitable for our little lady, it's given more support. My DParents have the Antilop at their house and have found it fab too.

Superlovely · 10/04/2015 16:44

Sounds mad but can you use reins instead of the harness ( they usually come with short straps which you link to the highchair) and packs of wet wipes to wedge him in? In a few months it will be fine so seems a shame to buy a new chair.

Ilovenannyplum · 10/04/2015 19:04

The current chair is seriously crap, I know it's wasteful but it's much more suited to a toddler sized little one than my little tiny boy.

I tried him in a Joie mimzy in mothercare today and I think I'm going to go for that one

That's another reason why Antilop has my vote - at £13 you can buy it with ththe intention of using it for just a few months or trying it out to see if it works for you with no guilt about the money! I like the tripp trap but I'd want to have twelve kids using the bastard thing at the price of it!

mandy214 · 10/04/2015 19:19

Antilop here too. Just brilliant. Apart from cost, sitting position etc, it is one of the most hygienic because the seat is a single piece of plastic, tray is a single piece, no seams / joints / corners for food to get trapped in / making it hard to clean. Straps can easily be removed to throw in the washing machine too. My premature twins used them from 8 months (and they were 12 weeks prem so were still really tiny at 8 months - maybe 13 or 14lbs?)

stargirl1701 · 10/04/2015 19:22

IKEA Antilop or pre-loved Stokke Tripp Trapp.

TeamEponine · 10/04/2015 19:29

DD is seven months and also tiny. She's mainly in 3-6 months clothes, but today was wearing a dress and cardi that are both 0-3 months! We have the fisher price space saver and she fits in it perfectly, and has done since she was four months. I'd highly recommend it for petite babies.

drspouse · 10/04/2015 19:29

We have the Baby Dan and got the five point harness (actually more like two three-point harnesses, one for legs and one for arms) and have wrapped it all round the seat more than once and it seems to be OK now. We did use the seat cushion as well. Our DD is 10 months and around the 9th centile too.
