I believe the rotavirus given in the 8 week immunisations is a live vaccine, has anyone had any problems/ illness after the vaccine?
Ds is due to have this when he's 9 weeks old were due to go away for the weekend the day after, should I push to get them done the week before I don't want him to be ill whilst we're away.

We had 1 night where we gave calpol for a slightly warm temperature and 48 hr of green nappies. Nothing that got in the way of day to day life. Smile She was not uncomfortable - the poo just looked green.

Roseybee10 · 08/04/2015 10:12

My wee one wouldn't eat for two days after.

VeryPunny · 08/04/2015 10:12

We had no problems with DS, but that means nothing - it's entirely babu dependent.

We had a week of diarrhea after both rotavirus immunisations. but it definitely depends on each baby.

bookwormbeagle · 08/04/2015 11:37

We had runny nappies for 2-3 days and general irritability, but not too much crying.

As it's a live vaccine it might be worth getting some disposable gloves for doing nappy changes and upping your hygiene levels when dealing with sicky Muslins, stained vests etc.

DD2 was unwell for a good week after, we can't be sure if it was the vaccine though. She could have caught another stomach virus (and been the only one in the household effected) of course.

WigfieldRocks · 08/04/2015 11:41

My ds had such bad side effects I refused the second one. He was screaming for two days and didn't feed, ended up dehydrated. Yes it was the rota virus that did it - confirmed by GP. It's a live vaccine and has to work it's way out. However several other peoples dc's who I know their dc's were fine with it so not all of them will get side effects.

moomoob · 08/04/2015 16:18

Is the rotavirus also given in the 12 week injection? Again he will be due this the day before we go abroad for 2 weeks, I've not planned this well at all have i

My lo has had it today. So far no particularly bad side effects. She's a bit fussier than usual but could just be me thinking that! We shall see...

My DS had a few runny nappies for a few days after but he didn't seem uncomfortable at all

mrsmugoo · 09/04/2015 12:54

Absolutely no after effects from any of the vaccinations here - he barely even cried when getting them. Don't anticipate a problem when there is every chance there won't be one!

RevoltingPeasant · 09/04/2015 19:16

DD had bad side effects - seemed fine right after but later that day became inconsolable. Bad abdo pain which interrupted sleep for a good 48 hours solid, and then intermittent for a week.

It pisses me right off that you're advised it's only "mild diarrhoea" as a side effect when loads of people obviously have much more severe reactions.

That said, after that week she was absolutely fine :) having the 12w ones in 10 days, so we'll see!

moomoob · 09/04/2015 19:39

Thanks I've rang them today I can't change my appointment I'm really not happy about him having something that has the potential to make him ill whilst we're away especially when it should be done the week before any way Angry. Is the rotavirus given separate? I've not been given any information about it at all just been told to turn up for it it's only from friends experiences that I know it's a live vaccine and has the potential to make them ill. Can I decline the rotavirus part and delay it til a later date?

oh dear - you are getting some really negative responses aren't you? My pbf has (and all but one of my NCT group has) sailed through all vaccinations (live and dead!) with no side effects other than a few interesting nappies. Sure some babies don't take it well, but most do. As others have said get some calpol in. I did and haven't needed it so far although our 16 week injections around the corner so I may get my monies worth yet!

Artistic · 10/04/2015 00:37

Mine had no major side effects. Only a bit tender at the site of the injections & needed cold packs to stop her pain. No effects of Rota virus at all. Maybe you needn't worry so much? And even if there is a reaction it won't last more than a day or 2.

mrsmugoo · 10/04/2015 08:19

Rotavirus is drops so yes I suppose you could just decline the drops and have the jabs.

KeturahLee · 10/04/2015 08:20

Mine had no reaction. You could always just not have the drops though if you are concerned.
