Hi there.
I was wondering what age your dc was when you first introduced pocket money, and how much per week you gave/give them at the start?

We started DD 6 months ago at 5 1/2, around the time she started, with £1 a week, and then only if her room was tidy mostly by me, but she has to help she has friends who started younger and others who haven't had pocket money yet.

It depends on how they get toys when it isn't their birthday or Christmas. We do not buy things randomly but instead he gets £10 a month. We do not use this for anything educational (books, activity magazines, games etc) but we did use it for his bike after quite a few months of saving (although we bought his helmet). We buy toys out of this fund. DS is 4.

DD age 5 £2 per week provided does homework without fuss tidies her room and playroom and puts her clothes away and dishes to sink after meals

we generally suggest save £1 for her next lego set and other £1 sweets comics etc I buy educational stuff clothes etc this is for extra toys and wee treats

I started Ds1 at 13 on £20 a week.
Ds2 gets that amount now.

We started DD when she started school as there was a charity shop right opposite and she would nag me every day to go in. After 2 weeks I said I would give her £1 on a Friday and she could spend it on whatever she wanted.
Cue many hideous 50p Barbies entering the house (and being returned on the Monday as she had left them in DS's pushchair all w/e and forgotten about them :))
It has gone up by 20p every birthday and now, at 12, she is on £2.40 a week. She has been offered a monthly allowance but has turned it down for now. She saves up for charity shopping trips (she has been trained well :)), buys sweets, nail polish, etc but has learnt to use her money well.
DS (9) lets his slip through his fingers like water inspite of the same process Hmm

I started giving mine at about 7. The 7 year old gets £1 a week, the 9 year old £1.50. They can spend it how they wish and it's not linked to chores.

We do half the child's age but this is dollars which are worth half of your currency. Started at age 5. My 6 yo gets $3 per week. We often forget to give it though! She is not that motivated to save for toys but would spend it all on sweets in a second.

We do 50p for every year - so our 8 year old gets £4.00 a week and our 11 year old gets £5:50 a week. However, this is subject to the completion of Chores.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 08/04/2015 02:55

Just started with DS who is 6.5. He gets$3 a week and has three money boxes - Spend, Save and Give. Spend is for sweets/comics/Popsicles , save is unallocated atm and giving is explained he can decide how and who to give to at the end of the year.

Not linked to chores or behavior
