Social Work University which do I choose

Hi everyone

Would really appreciate your advice as a lot hangs on my decision in terms of childcare vs the quality of teaching. I am looking to study BSc social work this September at the Uni of West London which is 1 and a half hours away but I was so blown away by the whole process, the interview, the structure, the lectures' presentation that I simply loved it. University of East London is the nearest Uni to me and though it's not bad and I enjoyed my open day for offers only my heart is drawn to west London uni. The distance is crippling but the level of teaching looks solid. I have four kids, youngest is 2 can go to childminders others in school. I would attend Uni of east London 2 full days 1 half day, uni of west London 2 half days 1 full day. Which should I choose. Thanks in advance

Please help.

What you also need to think about is where you will be placed on your placement next year. You will have a 70 day placement to travel back and forth to, as well as attending uni. I travel 1 and half hours (2 hours on a bad day) to uni but was lucky enough that my uni found me a placement closer to home.

Hi nemo81

Thanks for responding. The thing is when I asked them about work placements they said they manage to get students a work placement as close to home as possible which means they have contacts, so again this isn't a disadvantage to me. I had to think about that before I left the uni to make sure all areas and questions were covered.

I am a sw and went to a really good uni, great reputation etc but it didn't make any difference. The placements are where you really learn what it's like to be a sw its all very idealistic in the classroom and with all the horrendous cuts in sw now (and getting worst) it's really tough. I have done this work for a long time and it's never been as bad as it is now. Think about where you want to work and which uni will offer you the best chance of getting a placement there. We could sort our own placements as there was such a shortage. I loved being at uni I left believing I could change the world. Enjoy every moment of it, it's great!

Slippersmum do you mind me asking if you enjoy your work? I'm starting the social work degree this year and am super excited but I am concerned about the amount of people that leave the profession, is it really that bad?!

It is not a career I would choose if I had my time over. When I left child protection I had 60 children on my caseload. My friends who are still there have around 75. Which area do you want to go into.
