Getting DS to drink water?

mrsnlw · 01/04/2015 15:13

DS is nearly 8m and I offer water with his food. Recently changed from a TT sippy cup that is free flowing as DS isnt actually drinking from it, just swallowing because its pouring into his mouth as well as coughing and spluttering I bought a TT no spill sippy cup thing thats like a small TT bottle with handles and a nipple. He just chomps on the teat.

Any suggestions on how much water he actually needs and how I could get him to drink more water? He is weaning on 3 meals a day with 18-24oz milk a day.

TIA

It doesn't really matter if he doesn't drink much yet, try not to stress too much. If you are concerned, try him with some water dense foods such as melon, cauliflower, brocolli, soup and jelly.

Have you tried giving him an open cup in the bath? The novelty got mine drinking Smile

Mine didn't start drinking properly from a cup till about 11 months. Keep offering, but don't stress - if he doesn't show signs of dehydration, he is getting enough fluids from milk and food. Also, at some point (but a bit older) mine really started copying us - so if you drink water, he may want as well.

Same as pp, mine didn't really start drinking water much until about 11 months. He never really got on with the TT freeflow but he does great with a nuby straw beaker.

I have a vast collection of sippy cups in an attempt to find 'the one' for DS. Biggest success is with one with a straw, but he still only has occasional sips through the day at 14 months. He's bf still quite often though and plenty of wet nappies so I'm not concerned.
