Cots for daytime sleeping

DD is 15 weeks and currently sleeps in the carrycot/bassinet part of her pram on the living room floor during the day and a bed nest in our bedroom upstairs at night. However she is fast outgrowing the bassinet, (we have an Uppababy Vista - I'm watching the other thread with interest!) so we need to find something to replace it with. We thought a travel cot might be an option but I am a little worried that they are designed for occasional use rather than daily? Any advice would be very gratefully received! If a travel cot is the best option, any particular brands and models? I realise we will need to replace the bed nest with a proper cot in the next couple of months too!

My dd has slept in our room in a travel cot for about 3 months but we have a proper mattress for it rather than just the hard base it comes with, they are fine to use daily if using a mattress. Ours also has an extra bit that straps on so the baby lies higher up until they can pull themselves it makes it much easier to lift them in and out we have this on www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00T64L9F6/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?qid=1427795207&sr=1-8&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&dpPl=1&dpID=51hRK2R5QML&ref=plSrch

I used the growing out of the pram time as the opportunity to move DS into his own cot in his room for day time naps. It was a fair bit of work but definitely made the night transition to his own room much much easier. Appreciate that this isn't to everyone's view though as I know they are meant to sleep in the same room as an adult until they are six months etc etc.

When DS refused to sleep in the cot during the day and no longer fit in the pram he often just slept in the bouncy chair. Could that be an option?

My DDs just napped on the sofa Blush

I was planning to use a travel cot at night in our room for DD once she grows out her Moses basket (won't be long by the look of her!) before we're ready to move her into the cot. As PP says as long as you have a proper mattress they're fine to use.

Also we have one of these:

DD loves it & often naps in it during the day. Plus it's handy to take with us to my mum's etc.. for putting her down for a nap instead of taking her basket/pram.

Our DD now has her daytime naps in her cot in the nursery, and still sleeps in her bednest in our room at night. But if you're keen to keep her downstairs a travel cot should be fine- maybe buy a proper mattress for it if you're comcerned? The thing that would bug me is how far over you have to bend to get them in and out of it - a nightmare if you feed them to sleep as it's diffixult to put them in without a tiny drop the last few cm!!

DS used to nap in the bouncy chair or on the sofa.

Blush I used to swaddle dd and lay her on her (very soft and spongy) changemat on the rug. We did that for about a month or two, until I felt ok about her sleeping alone in the day.

Littlef00t · 31/03/2015 14:44

I spoke to a HV about travel cots and she advised that the issue with mattresses was more when babies were recommended to be laid on their front. Also for naps they don't sleep as deeply so not such an issue.

Many thanks all! These suggestions are incredibly helpful, DP and I are going through the options now with a tape measure at the ready Smile

We did the same with my DD, we had the Vista and used the bassinet until she grew out of it at 4 months (!). Now, she naps in her bouncer chair or sleepyhead, occasionally I will put her in her cot during the day. I strongly recommend getting a 'sleepyhead'- this revolutionised sleeping for us, you can easily move it between the cot and other places in the house so your baby has a consistent place to sleep. Amazing for travelling, it fits inside a travel cot. Have a look at the reviews on Amazon and John Lewis websites for more information, I live overseas and shipped one over, well worth it!

DD napped on the big bit of the sofa until she was about 5 months, then went in her cot upstairs with monitor and breathing sensor pad on after that. Have to say that naps got massively easier once she was going upstairs, but it's hard to say if that's because she was less distracted or just something that changed with ageSmile

SallyMischievo · 02/04/2015 14:07

Many thanks, Tallblue I am very keen on the idea of a Sleepyhead - please could I ask whether you can use it on its own or whether it would need to be placed in a travel cot? And also whether it is worth getting the 0-8 month size when DD is already almost 4 months and quite a big baby and also a long one? Should I go straight for the bigger size?

Cot in their bedroom.

Tallblue · 21/04/2015 11:47

Sorry for delayed response Sally.
I think the sleepyhead could be used on its own as its a standalone unit, however when your baby gets bigger and can climb around I reckon it would be safer to have it inside a travel cot.
I would suggest getting the sleepyhead grand as your baby sounds a similar size to mine and she outgrew the smaller size by about 5 months.
