Terrible colic

Roseybee10 · 31/03/2015 07:26

My poor baby has colic and it's awful. She's 7.5 weeks now and is starving but screams at every feed, can't bring wind up and gets so distressed that the only way to calm her is to put her to sleep.
She's not gaining weight well and has dropped to 7th centile due to not being able to take more than 2-3oz a feed. I don't think its reflux as shes never sick and doesn't have bad nappies either.
My first daughter was the same but she was bigger so when she dropped centiles there wasn't the same concern. I'm getting stick from my Hv because she isn't gaining weight well but I don't know what else to do. I know she's going to want to weigh her when I take her for her jags this week and I know she won't have gained much.

I tried infacol with dd1 which caused her to projectile vomit so don't want to try that this time. Dentinox and gripe water help a little but not much. Anti colic bottles don't help at all. I try feeding her sitting up and burping after every Oz.
I don't know what else to do :-(

We've got her on Hipp organic. Did a lot of research when dd1 was like this and found Hipp organic came out top so started dd2 on it straight away when the bf didn't work out.

Might not suit dd2 the same though. Saw a massive change in dd1 when we switched from Aptimel to Hipp but she was also around 10 weeks so could just have been her age x

Sorry missed your last post julie.
She has a posterior tongue tie. I've had it checked by 3 mw, two health visitors and two GPs and they all have concluded that it's very mild and shouldn't affect her feeding or speech later on x

That was an interesting read Julie. Could explain why she's taking in so much air. I pushed for it to be cut constantly when she was first born as couldn't establish bf due to an incredibly painful latch, her bobbing on and off constantly and her being unable to stimulate let down and getting frustrated.

HV dismissing the tongue tie and thinks it's reflux but I don't think so. Got apt with the really good gp at half 11 which is great.

Good luck.

reflux is often a symptom. not a diagnosis. I would ask to trial a milk if they will allow.

Dd had aptamil pepti. was fab she was a different baby.

Roseybee10 · 02/04/2015 14:16

Dr thinks silent reflux. Has prescribed Gaviscon and renatadine so hoping it helps.
Dd1 got much better around 10 weeks so even if it just helps for another few weeks til she comes out of it. X

I think with the fact that she has posterior t, the swallowing air and the difficulty to bf, it is this that could be affecting her. I'm not an expert though, have a look here for some more information.. If you have a search, I think there are some Facebook support groups for tongue tie in the uk. Have a Google of images of lip tie too and see if she appears the same, although lip tie hasn't been associated with feeding problems, it might be worth getting that divided whilst you are sorting out the tt Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 02/04/2015 16:47

Also agree with Giles. Silent reflux is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Roseybee10 · 02/04/2015 17:30

I made my concerns very clear to the dr about the tongue tie and he completely dismissed it, as did the HV. So frustrated.
I checked dd1 and she has a posterior tongue tie as do I.

Unfortunately very few HCP know anything about tt or the things it can cause. Much better to contact someone who is more experienced. Sounds like you might have to do this without the support of your gp and HV though Smile

Glad you saw the GP, my ds had a posterior tongue tie and reflux, caused similar symptoms as you describe but he was actually sick lots! Breastfeeding was a nightmare. At 4 weeks we put him on comfort milk which is thicker than normal formula, helped him keep it down. And helped the colicky symptoms. He had his tongue snipped at 3 wks old too, after being told repeatedly it wasn't an issue, it very clearly was! My niece had silent reflux and had similar colicky symptoms, refusal of milk like you describe, she was put on gaviscon and ranitidine and it helped.
Hope you find your dd settles over the next few days, it's so stressful when nothing seems to soothe them.

Roseybee10 · 03/04/2015 09:01

Thank you. That sounds hopeful. Gaviscon seems to be helping a bit so far. We've mAnaged two 5oz bottles since starting it yay.

That's great Smile

Roseybee10 · 03/04/2015 13:35

Not great now lol. Spoke too soon. Two bottles of 2oz so far this morning and really grizzly and sore. ??

Try keeping head above tummy at all times - no lying flat - folded towel under mattress cushion for nappy change - helps with wind and could be heart burn.

Bigbadgeorge · 03/04/2015 13:46

I would be asking the gp to prescribe hydrolysed formula for CMPI. I went through it with my DD, it was rough!
It wouldn't do any harm and it might help.

PragmaticWench · 03/04/2015 13:51

DS had a posterior tt which the GP dismissed so I found a private IBCLC (lactation consultant) and had it snipped. Worth every penny!!

DS is also allergic to cows milk protein and soya and has reflux. Thankfully the ranitidine is helping and now we know what the causes are, and can treat them, he's a happy baby. DD had silent reflux and multiple allergies that nobody diagnosed so she screamed for 8 months, almost solidly. I feel your pain, it's grim and doctors seem to love writing it off as 'colic' and making out you're neurotic.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/04/2015 14:00

yy to pepti milk.

Please ask for a trial.

Roseybee10 · 03/04/2015 19:08

I've got her on Hipp organic which seemed to come out top in the research I did for comfort formulas (although it's not officially s comfort formula).
I think if it hasn't xleared up by 10 weeks I'll think about changing her milk.
We had dd1 on Aptimel and she was like this and as soon as we changed her to Hipp it got better. I know every baby is different so not sure which one to switch to if we did decide to do it. X

Seems to be getting worse instead of better. Planning on getting new bottles tomorrow and trying the mam anti colic to help with the wind and putting her on Colief (that really helped dd1 when she exhibited similar symptoms).
Just praying she comes out of it soon. She's almost 9 weeks. I remember it peaking at its worst with dd1 at this time and get getting better so stupidly hoping the sand happens.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/04/2015 07:30

Sorry to hear that things are getting worse. Have you managed to do any reading up on tongue tie? Do you think it's worth contacting a tongue tie expert?

I'd take her back to the GP too, if you haven't already and insist on a referral Smile

slightlyinsane · 07/04/2015 08:42

Please go back to The go, I'm not trying to sound horrible but you have a 10 wk milestone you're hoping will cure it and by the sounds of things that's not going to happen. You're going to feel even worse when you realise it hasn't happened, been there and done that 3 times! I would highly recommend changing to a milk protein free milk, my twins were exactly as you describe but as time went on the nappies got worse before the new milk we were going through about 12 changes of clothes a day, a few days on new milk different babies. Please go to go again it can take soooo long to get prescription milk (9months for us) because they feel the need to try other things first.

Roseybee10 · 07/04/2015 09:31

Seeing the HV tomorrow so will raise my concerns again. I'm not convinced enough yet on the tongue tie to go down the route of having it done privately (we are really struggling with money and I'm not sure if it will even make any difference having it cut, it looks exactly the same as dd1's).
Will ask about cow milk protein allergy and give the Colief a try to see if it's an issue with breaking down lactose.
I know what you're sayibg about the 10 week thing but I also know most babies grow out of this at the 3 month mark so I'm not sure how willing I am to pump her full of medication and go down the referral route just yet when there is a good chance it will right itself in a week or two once her digestive system matures a bit more. Of course if it doesn't start getting better in a week or two then I would be more willing to investigate further as that would then say to me that it's a more serious issue than just a fairly common immature digestion issue.

Roseybee10 · 07/04/2015 22:57

Just got the mam anti comic bottles and they definitely seem to be helping her although she's still struggling a bit. I'm not hearing her gulping air any more which is great.
Hoping things improve tomorrow for her.

You may be able to get the txt done for free, some tt dividers are voluntary and you should be able to get it done on the nhs but you may have to push for it. Did you read the long term difficulties it can cause? My 11 yo has only just been discharged from SLT.

I hope things do change at 10 weeks as you are hoping but could you get a referral now and cancel the appointment if she is ok? At least then you'll be on the waiting list if things don't get better.
