Worried that I stopped using pram too early

I have the uppababy vista. My baby was getting very frustrated laying down and so I started using the seat attachment in recline from about 3.5 months. Little one is now 4.5 months and I've just read online that babies should be in the pram until six months. ..I had no idea. I just did what made the baby happy and didn't realise it could cause back problems.

If I go back to using the pram attachment now will it be ok?

Both of mine would have been in a reclined position rather than fully flat by that age

dementedpixie · 29/03/2015 22:02

how reclined does it go?

Izzy82 · 29/03/2015 22:06

I have the uppababy vista and put my boy in at 4 months. He loved it. I read somewhere that they could go in it from even earlier so I wouldn't worry. I saw a new born in the chair bit when I was out shopping once and he looked much comfier than my son did in the bassinet

Don't worry! It's fine. I did exactly the same thing. DS cried whenever he was laid flat, unless he was asleep. I used to have it reclined at roughly car seat angle when he was awake and laid it back for sleeping.

What do you think it's going to do to him?

bumb1ebeesknees · 29/03/2015 22:14

It can fully recline but their feet and back are still at a right angle. So feet up in the air. I have used it one up from full recline so ds could see out and about a bit. I think I'll see if he will tolerate the pram again for a bit but he's 90th centile for length so it won't last to six months :/

Relax, it's okay. My 17 week old has been in her seat unit for 3 weeks now as she outgrew the cot section. She's off the centile for length and I made the decision to switch because I didn't think squishing her into the basket would be comfortable or beneficial for the sake of keeping her flat. Does your DC have good head control?

Christelle2207 · 29/03/2015 22:22

I also had the vista and put DS in the seat from about 4 months. He's now 20 months and still enjoying it.

BertieBotts · 29/03/2015 22:28

IIRC, it's about the curve of their spine. So if legs and back are at a right angle that's fine - his back is still straight. It doesn't matter what his legs are doing. Obviously fully upright would make his back slump which is why those cheap umbrella buggies are for 4m+

BoobooChild · 29/03/2015 22:35

I'm getting worried now. Dd was in a reclined seat attachment from about 3 months. She wanted to be able to look round and had started crying every time we put her in the lying down pram. She'd been fully supporting her head for a while before we did it. She's 8 months now and seems OK but I hope there's no damage. I had no idea 6 months was recommended.

mrsmugoo · 30/03/2015 07:01

I have an uppababy too - yes we swapped to the seat with the infant snugseat by 3 months. He absolutely hated the carrycot.

dementedpixie · 30/03/2015 08:03

6 months is recommended for that particular seat whereas others (without a formed seat section) are ok from a younger age. My travel system pushchair was suitable from birth as it could fully recline into a flat position (without legs being bent into a seated position)

AnythingNotEverything · 30/03/2015 08:10

In the US they recommend the vista toddler seat with the snugseat insert (whichdoesntflatyen the curve at all, it's just a head hugger really) from birth.

We switched at about 16 weeks as I felt DD was strong enough (and DD was sitting independently at 20 weeks). I still used the carrycot for long day trips though.

I'm sure it's fine. Maybe you could pad around her with a blanket so she's a bit more supported?

Penfold007 · 30/03/2015 08:14

DD loved the carrycot bit, DS hated it and we used the seat well reclined from four months. It's about the spine being straight but supported.

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 30/03/2015 12:50

DD went in the seat section of our vista from about 4 months. She hated lying flat as she couldn't see anything - I ended up carrying her all the time. She's now 9 months and perfectly fine.
My neice went in the seat early too as she's tall and outgrew the cot. She's now 18 months and fine!

MrsBojingles · 31/03/2015 00:18

We found that you can undo a strap on the vista toddler seat to make it drop flatter - the strap is under where the knees should be. DD looks much happier since we've dropped that - she outgrew the pram at 4 months :(

Scotinoz · 31/03/2015 09:31

My DD was in the Vista seat by about 12/14wks. She was bored in the bassinet. At 18 months she seems 100% unscathed. I'm due with Baby 2 in a couple of weeks and they might go straight into the seat ShockWink

AnythingNotEverything · 31/03/2015 13:48

MrsBojingles that's really interesting!

Scot - I don't k ow if this helps if your actually in Oz, but I've bought a Silver Cross Babynest which, with the help of a strategically placed blanket, fits in the toddler seat and totally flattens the bend in the seat. Other bucket seat style toddler seats have seemingly compatible wedges/nests. I did a lot of research as you can only use the rumble seat with the toddler seat, and I'm due another baby in the summer Smile

Sleepyhoglet · 31/03/2015 21:26

My dd is 4.5 months and is still in vista bassinet- it's such a big one I want to use as long as possible. However when she goes is her bugaboo be she is in the normal seat.

Scotinoz · 31/03/2015 21:40

AnythingNotEverything - thanks for the tip on the baby nest! I'm in Oz but Amazon delivers most things Smile I've got the Vista newborn insert but will have a look today of how flat it makes it then investigate the nest. Thanks again!

zoeedge · 31/03/2015 21:43

We moved our son into seat part at 3.5mths for 2 reasons he hated being flat and simply outgrew the pram part as very long/tall so don't worry x

AnythingNotEverything · 31/03/2015 21:58

Scot - Uppababy in the UK don't recommend the snugseat until 6 months! I've no idea what it's actually for. The Silver Cross Babynest is the best "hack" I've found. It's not perfect, but it does allow baby to lay flat and be strapped in safely.

You can buy them direct from Silver Cross, and their factory shop sells on ebay under babycaredirect I think.
