Flu jab for 2year olds?

Quick question - has your 2yo been invited to have the flu jab? I was at the walk in clinic today and one of the standard questions was whether immunisations were up to date, I said yes because I thought they were.

Then I was asked when DS had his flu jab, which I didn't know he should have had so I said he hadn't. Apparently this means his immunisations are not up to date.

The flu jab has never been mentioned to me, we were at the GP on Friday and it wasn't mentioned nor at his 2 year check which was 2 months ago. I know my GP surgery can be a bit late with certain things but DS is 2.6 so I'm hoping he hasn't been missed off the list. It could be that the dr I saw was misinformed? So was wondering if this is a routine jab.

Yes my 2 year old has had it , but it's not a jab. They squirter it up their nose.

Ah, well that sounds better than a jab! Did the GP contact you or did you have to request it?

DS had it last year. October ish I think. They just sent a letter saying they were having an open clinic and to drop in that morning.

It was extremely ineffective iirc. Grin

I was "invited" for this, but I didn't go. He'd had previous flu vaccines though, I just really didn't see the point as he's older now. He was absolutely fine. Not being funny but I know people who have missed booster jabs and that for their kids and they haven't ended up being ill once.

Article here. Effective in 3% of cases. That's just the way it goes but hopefully it will reassure you a little bit.

I had a letter from surgery. But did not do it even if it was not an injection itself. Kid is healthy, flu jabs often sometimes miss their target, not fighting the right virus. kid did not get it actually only had minor colds and is at nursery 3d/wk.

Reassure you I mean in that as luck would have it, this year's wasn't the success hoped for and the strain of flu causing the problems over this winter wasn't combatted by the vaccine.

Buttercup27 · 30/03/2015 21:22

We didn't get a letter , I read a poster while I was having my flu jab so booked him in at the same time. The nurse said it depends on where you are in the country whether you get a letter or not.

dd isn't old enough for it yet but I will be making sure she gets it. both do and I suffer with asthma so her chances of developing it are high and flu can be a killer for suffers like me who have a very bad chest so I would rather take a punt on it being effective

It was only available on the NHS to children who had turned 2 by the 1st of September 2014 - DD missed out by two weeks. Few surgeries do it privately and it's not available commercially eg Boots or Tesco. It's not part of the schedule
