13.5 month old crying/screaming at nap times and bedtime

Dd has always been a good sleeper (unlike dd1??). Until about 5days ago she would happily go down for every nap and bedtime and self settle in a very short while. Until then she was following this sort of pattern:

7.30 - wake up
9.45/10 -11 nap
2-3.30 -nap
6.30/7 bed

She would do this at home and grandparents (who look after girls while I work).

Now however she has started really screaming at nap times and bedtimes and not falling asleep for a long time. I'm just not sure why this is. Im not sure if it's developmental and so I should keep to our rouitne or if she just suddenly needs less sleep. She is very determined and headstrong and nothing will convince her to sleep if she doesnt want to. I don't want to just cut her naps if she still needs the sleep and is just going through a phase. Just not sure what to do for the best.

Today I tried capping the am nap at 30 mins. When she went down it was eventually 10.30 and I woke her at 11. I then out her down again at 3but she took 35 mins to go off and then woke after 40mins. So cutting the nap does not seem to work.

Is anyone's little one similar to this. What do/did you do? Any ideas on how to tackle this?

In my experience ds slept like a log at nap times until he was 2.5

However dd gave up all naps at 18 months Shock

I'd suggest your dd probably only needs an after lunch nap so I'd try that
Good luck !

Also I never ever woke a sleeping baby
I'm sorry but that way lies madness

Why wake her at 11 when she only went down at 10.30??!!

Thanks. I woke her at 11 cos otherwise she was sleeping for an 1.5 hrs until about 11.30/45 and then would be up all day Til bed. I capped it so that she would hopefully take a second nap.

I find when mine does this, it's usually cos she needs her wake time extending, ie she's not really tired enough...and so starts fighting it...she's nearly 13 months and can now stay awake for about 3 and three-quarter/4 hrs..could maybe try lengthening your DDs awake time a bit....?
Mind you, we are currently also at the stage where one nap is not quite enough and two naps is a bit too much, but that's a whole other thread! Grin
Ah babies...

It was about that time that my ds went down to one nap. She might be crying because she's not tired and so is annoyed at the nap time/bedtime thing? And maybe when she only had the cut short morn nap she then got overtired so the result was the same but the reasons different iyswim?

For what it's worth my ds only sleeps in the morn for about 1.5 hours rather than having the typical after lunch nap. So he has a long awake spell from lunch to bed, but it works for him. Just thought it was worth mentioning in case your dd was similar.

Thanks yongnian. I think thats where we re at too. I also think she's started to realise she's missing out when she goes to sleep. I know it shouldn't, but is stresses me out and makes me anxious. Silly really, I guess.

Thanks hoggle. I do think she maybe only needs 1 nap (or at least most days). Maybe I'll try stretching her out tomorrow and see how long she can last. Maybe an early Lucy 11/11.30 then down for a nap.

My lo has just turned 13 months and was doing this so in the last week we have gone to one nap. If we are out and about she might fall asleep mid morning so I just let her sleep as long as she wants to and she has a late lunch then no more sleep until bed time. If we are in the house she is usually ok until 11-11.30 lunch then nap straight after. Bedtime is 7pm. hth

Thank you. Yes, I think it's definitely time to try 1 nap. Hopefully this will be the solution.??
