Which clothes to bed? How to arrange bedding?

Ok some possibly really stupid questions here. First time mum so bear with me!

What do your babies go to bed wearing?
What bedding do you use?
How do you tuck in the bedding so that it doesn't raise the mattress? Mines tucked in but has pushed the mattress up lots due to the amount tucked in!

The room is usually around 18-19 degrees and I can't seem to find a definitive answer to these questions anywhere! X

Our 6mo wears vest and sleepsuit. Then is in a baby sleeping bag thing sometimes with a blanket over the top and tucked in. As it only 1 blanket it doesn't raise the mattress. The sleep bags are brilliant as they won't usually need any blankets etc. His room is usually 20-22.

I use fitted sheets in the cot. Baby wears vest, socks a sleep suit. His bedding is a sleeping bag / gro-bag that he can't kick off. The room is probably 18 - 20 degrees.

How old is your baby? Could you either use a sleeping bag or cut the blankets in half so they are smaller?

Mine (5mo) has a vest abd sleepsuit on, swaddled in a giant muslin square, then a small thin blanket over the top (too small to tuck under the bottom but it des tuck in either side).

I used to put my son in a babygro with baby PJs over the top and socks. Used fitted sheets and he had a cot blanket with his "cuddle" blanket. He also had a sleeping bag (grobag or whatever they're called) during Winter with a blanket at his mid.
I know it's a bit confusing as to what to put them in because you think "they'll get cold" or "they're too hot"...I was like that anyway, but you kinda get used to what to put them in quite quickly. In Summer, I usually let him wear a babygro with just PJ bottoms and socks.

Now though, he's 3 and doesn't really like wearing PJs which is annoying, he's got some nice ones that he's worn once! >.

Ours just wears a good thick baby grow and we have a 2.5 tog "gro bag" sleeping bag in a 19 degree room.

The HV explained this was enough, the instructions on the gro bag said the same.
I sleep in the same room in pj's under a light quilt. DD is happy and sleeps well.

In fact following me realising most babies wear more I tried an extra layer and she got over hot and slept terribly!
Maybe I have a self heating infant?

squizita · 26/03/2015 11:12

Lonz a baby grow with legs? And pj bottoms over tge top in summer? Or a vest/legless one with pj's over?

Ilovenannyplum · 26/03/2015 11:19

Big fan of a grobag over here!
DS is 7 months, has vest & babygro with 2.5 tog grobag. No blankets as they always end up over his face or round his neck Confused his room is between 17 and 20 degrees.
I have just bought a 1 tog gro bag for when it gets a bit warner

Cosmomouse · 26/03/2015 12:33

Oh goodness, it sounds like my boy doesn't wear enough... Our room is around 17-18 degrees and he wears a vest and sleepsuit with a fleece blanket folded over. He seems ok though and sleeps well!

NotCitrus · 26/03/2015 12:36

Grobag until age 2-3, babygro under, vest in winter.
Then pyjamas and duvet (tucked under mattress). Once in full size bed, stopped tucking duvet under.

squizita · 26/03/2015 12:38

Cosmo I think it's better to be too light than over wrapped safety wise. Smile Or at least I've been told that.

If they were cold they'd feel cold and not sleep well.

HazleNutt · 26/03/2015 14:50

Fitted sheets. Sleeping bag - we use merino ones, and have a really thin muslin one for summer. Clothes depending on room temperature - short or long sleeve vest, babygrow or a combination of those. Now at 20 months he has a PJ but still sleeping bag, as he flops around a lot and would never keep a duvet on.

MrsCK · 26/03/2015 17:38

My 6 week old is in his crib and is very small so too tiny for a sleeping bag yet.

We have fitted sheets. He wears a vest and sleep suit and I make sure these are plain and muted colours so as not to over stimulate him at night (probably very pub of me)

I then swaddle him in a swaddle bag but only to under his arms as he loves to chew on his hands. I then have a light blanket over the top tucked in underneath the mattress. It does make the mattress lift a bit. ..perhaps more so as it's a crib and so smaller.
I am planning on using sleeping bags when he is big enough!

Bodicea · 26/03/2015 19:35

Baby grow or romper and 2.5 tog sleeping bag at the mo. No vest.

Kiwiinkits · 26/03/2015 20:12

If you can, use natural fibres for bedding, eg. Merino and cotton. Synthetics like polar fleece sweat very easily and can present more of a fire risk.

purplemurple1 · 26/03/2015 20:25

8 week old - 2.5 tog grow bag with vest and babygrow. Qhen she was smaller i put a stitch in the neck of the growbag so her head couldnt slip inaide thw bag. Early days i just used one of those holey blankets.

18month old is just in pjs as he stopped using bedding at 12months - not sure why he just goes crazy if we try to use it.

squizita · 26/03/2015 21:04

MrsCK don't worry too much about colour. They can't really see in colour till 8 weeks + at the earliest as I understand it!

Lonz · 26/03/2015 21:59

squizita: No. The sleeveless ones with no legs (I don't really know what they're called?) With PJ bottoms. With a medium thickness blanket, this was in like Autumn time, at night. During the day, he lounged in just a babygro (sleeveless or long sleeved)

squizita · 27/03/2015 07:16

Smile Lonz Ah ... I thought so but wondered if you lived somewhere particularly cold!
