Hi
I have been a long time browser of mumsnet but this is my first post. I hope its in the right place!

My daughter is 12 days old. Since I felt able after the birth we have taken her out and about quite a bit e.g pub lunches, coffee shops, shopping centres, supermarkets etc. mainly as we started going stir crazy. I've just come across on the internet people saying you shouldn't take baby out for ages? I feel awful now as I didn't realise (first time mummy). I was wondering how old your babies were when you first took them out?
Thank you

Not taking them out used to be the main way to avoid infectious diseases. Plus also, taking them out used to involve much heavier equipment and materials, as I recall from my childhood.

Immunization programs, and plastics, have changed the equation considerably.

But I would still avoid really crowded places. i used to work at Disneyland, and was surprised to realise how common it seemed to be to bring newborns to the resort when Grandparents came in from out of state to meet the new baby. I am old enough to remember the old advice, and observed it, though more less closely than my mother did back when. But my misgivings have been justified with the outbreak last winter.

We took DD to the pub for lunch at 24 hours old, we couldn't be bothered to cook! At 48 hours we went to Tesco and got a nasty comment from an elderly lady about how we should keep her home until 6 weeks or we were putting her in danger I'm not sure what of. Take your baby out whenever you want to! I had to go out or I would have gone insane.

Yes definitely take baby out and about just be careful yourself that you don't over do it your body is still recovering from a major ordeal. Go for short walks or to places where you can sit and rest if your feeling tired. Congratulations enjoy your new baby

I wasn't out for about a week or so with both- first due to an EMCS and second as we were readmitted for jaundice. I did avoid lots of child heavy environments as I was worried about illness, but I am not sure how rational that was.
