Too early to train????!!!!!!

My ds is 22 months. For the last week or so, he has gone along with my suggestion to 'have a wee in the potty' before getting in the bath, and actually done one. Sometimes, since we are so enthusiastic about it, he will sit on it again and produce a few more drops for us to cheer over!

However, the rest of the time, he shows no sign of being aware of a wet or dirty nappy. His speech is not very advanced, and he seems to be still a 'baby' in many ways. My dd was 2.3 when she was trained and was fully conversant by this stage.

What should I do with him?

Hiya cheekygirl, he doesn't sound ready to me if hes not aware of whether hes wet or dry. i would leave it till hes at the stage where hes telling you hes about to go and in the meantime just keep work on his awareness of being wet, having needed a wee etc. my son was nearer 3 when we did him but got the hang of it v quickly so wouldn't worry about it just yet if it were me. x

Appreciate the fact that he's different!

Boys are always later to potty train than girls - apparently it's because we have muscles we can 'clench' around our urethra (or is it ureter?)and blokes don't!

My 2 boys were both nearly 3 before they were potty trained, despite talking in sentences at around 18 months. If you try too soon you'll just end up having to ask him about every 20 mins if he wants a wee.

Much better to put up with nappies for a bit longer and avoid the 'accidents'.

Think you are setting yourself a seriously big challenge to potty train at 22 months for a boy, you'll just be cleaning up wee and poo for months, even next summer wouldn't be too long.

Thank you all! My 'gut feeling' was that it was too early, but I didn't want to miss the boat if he really was ready. I will take the advice and just get him used to the whole wee/poo thing first. I certainly haven't got the time or inclination to clear up after him constantly for six months!

Hmm,neither of my children are good talkers but both potty trained before they were two.
I think having used cloth nappies, both they and I had an extra incentive to get it all under control.
Am loving my nappy free status.
