why is this so hard for me to do? Ive written umpteen essays at college- but this one? this one I have just sat and stared at for about a week

brief- DISCUSS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF PROFESSIONAL CODES OF CONDUCT AND REFLECTION TO YOUR ONGOING DEVELOPMENT AS A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL.

Why am I finding this one a nightmare? I have to demonstrate using practical examples. But the code is massive and my word count is only 1500 ( I know- its not even a big piece!!)

any help to a poor simple 1st year?????

I would assume that it would be along the lines of what your interpretation of professional codes of conduct are. Although there are many you could outline a few main key ones and relate them to the work you are doing at the moment. Perhaps talk about WHAT professional codes of conduct are and WHY they are in place(pretend the person reading it knows nothing about it) and how they help you to become a competant healthcare proffesional.
Its suprising how you can bulk out essays will extra words after youve finished writing it!

To add to what Busyalexsmummy suggests how about code of prof conduct is there to protect professionals as much as protecting the public, being able to show accountability for your actions and omissions. The need for ongoing training both mandatory and training to update knowledge, therefore being able to provide best up to date practice. Can you reflect on how you feel you've developed. How far into your training are you?

IS this your professional studies assignment? Have you had your first placement yet?

There are also spefici guidelines for student nurses undertaking placements which you can refer too.

I would suggest compiling an essay plan. THere should be a list of outcomes that you should achieve in the essay as well to give you pointers.

the nmc code is here here

Respecting the clients wishes and Consent are always good area's for discussion. Think ther are 7 main areas, speak a little about each and use examples from practice or that you have expereienced. Dont forget to reference!

What branch of nursing are you doing?

Hi, as an experienced A&E sister (on mat leave at mo), the most important thing to stress is that they are important. I don't know if any other nurses out there have had a problem at work, whether it's a drug error or lack of documentation, and have the code of conduct read out to them ?

We all know it's there but could we quote it ??

My advice would be to stress a little the importance of it on our daily work. Don't know if this helps.

When I did an essay on consent what jumped out at me was that the first bit related to each secition (treat each patient/client as an indivdual) so maybe use that as a starting point?

Things about accountability, importance of paperwork, importance of confidentiality, professionalism all come into play. Oh and nurse as an advocate for the patient.

I bet nursing standard/nursing times have done some fabby articleson the code, maybe see?
