My 1yo DD has just fallen and banged her head. She seems absolutely fine except for a massive lump and it was already starting to bruise when I ran to pick her up! She playing just, as I said, she seems fine but should I take her to the doctor? I feel awful! What a terrible parent!

Fallen from where, how high? Fallen from walking to the floor? Unless she's some fluke statistic she'll be fine, expect many many more bumps Wink

If she isn't drowsy or in pain then don't worry about it. Keep an eye on her and if she seems dizzy or anything like then then phone the doc. Mine bumps his head almost every day (11 months- learning to walk) and the first time he did it he got a big bump like something out of a cartoon. He was fine though. Skulls are great!!

Keep an eye. If she's consolable, continues to play and eat like normal, isn't sick then the chances are she is fine. Keep an eye on her when she naps and make sure she doesn't sleep too long. It's pretty normal and I've heard that as long as it bruises/bumps immediately that is a good sign.

But of course we haven't seen her so if you are worried then see if there's a docs appointment later.

Little ones are more resilient than you think. And the soft spot is actually well protected. I accidentally banged my nieces head with my elbow when she was a baby, she was fine, but I was the one crying thinking I had injured her and caused some sort of long term damage. Keep a lookout for any unusual symptoms. She should be fine though.

Just walking height, thankfully she isn't into climbing yet! I can imagine that will be an even scarier time. She usually controls her falls really well if you know what I mean, she never really hurts herself just gets up and carries on. This one just scared me though. I feel terrible I should have been close enough to stop it!!

A cold pad might help so it doesn't get too inflamed.

I keep a bottle of water (one of ds's old small ones) in the fridge for when ds bumps himself- it seems to help. You shouldn't feel terrible, you just can't be right there every second. You just can't. Toddlers are accidents trying to happen.
