Your best remedy for blocked nose/snuffles in babies?

Hello - has anyone got any good advice for helping babies clear a blocked nose?

My 2-month old is struggling with feeds and is getting generally grumpy and uncomfortable because of his blocked nose. When he has a big cry he clears it himself and after a bath he's much clearer, but I'd like to be able to help him with a more on-going remedy.

I've read that saline drops help to loosen snot, but I'd hate it if I got water squirted up my nose! Anyone had good experiences with this or any other remedies.

Many thanks in advance, from my snotty son!

Snuffle babe is good, especially at night.

The saline spray is not too bad, my DD did wail for 5 seconds after administration but then was better.

The nuk snot suckers are good too, but babies can be a bit funny with having the snot sucked out!

Also, can you have a shower with baby in the room? The steam helps immeasurably.

A humidifier can also be v useful. We have not used one but friends swear by them.

Good luck, a snotty tiny baby is not much fun!

definitely saline drops. We always put drops in but at the doctor when ds1 was tiny I was shocked to see them squirt the whole bottle up the nose in one go. We also used to chop a fresh onion and hang it by the bed at night - stunk, but worked really well. Run the shower full power and heat in a closed bathroom so its really steamy and bath him in the steamy bathroom.

You have to be careful with humidifiers because they make the room damp and you can get mold.

Snuffle babe, on clothes and bedding not near face, saline drops, rather than spray, paracetamol ie calpol can dry up snot, sitting in bathroom with hot shower running, head of cot propped up, and snot sucker, esp before feeding. I know dd hates it, but she's happy enough when she realises she can breathe again.

Saline drops are the best, you just have to moderate them. My boy is a year old now and i still use them from time to time. Also snuffle babe is a good option for a two month old. We even tried a humidifier because the baby used to get blocked nose quite often but it did not have any affect at all. Also put pillows under his cot mattress so that he lies at a slight slant.

Saline spray up the nose - the salt helps to break down the mucus.

Also put some vicks (I use whatever I've got, full strength or babyvicks) on the soles of the feet, from toe to heel, then put socks on (or feet in sleeper/babygrow thing) - don't ask me how it works but it clears the body so baby can sleep.

Using it currently with a very snotty infant, it works like a charm.

Vicks plug-in vaporiser is good, it lasts 8 hours and gives off a nice green glow Smile

Saline spray all the way, it really helps, especially just before a feed. My 6 mo DS actually quite likes having it done now (he is a snot monster).

Jump in the shower together, we did this and it was an ice relaxing way to clear his nose

imnotproud · 19/03/2015 22:20

Nice, not ice!

Saline spray worked a treat, but was NOT popular! Got some vics as back up too. He's sound as a bell this morning - thanks ladies! x
