baby porridge and alternatives

DD has been weaning for around 3 weeks now and I'm starting to introduce a regular breakfast. She seems to like baby porridge but I don't imagine she'll be on it for long as it just seems so runny.

Does anyone have any alternatives? She's still on purees but has had a wee taste of some mashed banana and I think she'll be able to handle it.

How old is she?
Mine had porridge made with oats and milk, or wetabix.
Eggs, bread products (muffins, crumpets, bagels, toast) etc when on finger foods.

ready brek or weetabix as long as she's 6 months ish not 3 months.

However you don't have to give " breakfast" labelled foods just because it's 9am. She could have mashed veg ( or stewed apple or pear- tinned pears in juice mash well) just as easily that was left from the night before.

Why not try a bit of baby lead weaning ( again as long as 6 months ish and sitting well etc) and just pop a bit of toast on her high chair as you eat.

Baby porridge, like most commercial weaning foods is very sweet.

Oh, and yoghurt - mine loved greek yoghurt with some stewed fruit on

If you bake apple slices they're soft enough to mash their gums on and easy to pick up! I have to my dd with crem freche

She's six and a half months. I was thinking about finger foods - toast fingers etc, and yogurt and fruit - definitely, a nice easy option! Littleturkish I love that idea of baked apple slices! I forgot to ask about when she could move onto regular porridge or readybrek but that has already been answered!

Also, a question only slightly related to the original post. Thinking about finger foods, is it ok to freeze peeled and cut up fruit and veg? Specifically thinking about carrot and sweet potato batons and apple slices? I'm thinking it probably is ok?..........

Cooked fruit and veg to freeze?
Yep, should be OK, but remember the defrosting advice is to make sure its piping hot after defrosting before cooling.
Raw carrot and apple won't freeze.

We typically just cooked a little extra veg with our tea, and bubs had that the next day.

Egg in a cup is good: hard boiled egg mashed up in a cup with a bit of butter. You can make it as chunky or as smooth as you like.

re baby porridge - we found that whizzing up standard porridge oats in the blender made it fine enough to feed to DS when he was little. No lumps, but sooo much cheaper than baby porridge, with the added bonus of having no added sugar Smile

guinnessgirl · 20/03/2015 22:00

sorry, should have been clearer - blending the oats PRIOR to adding milk/water and cooking, not after! Grin

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 20/03/2015 22:04

We used to make dd's own muesli by blitzing oats and various nuts/dried fruits til they were really fine. Add milk/yoghurt/stewed fruit as desired Smile
