What do you use to wash your little ones? Flannel, sponge, hand etc.

Hi, I'm just wondering what is the normal way to wash your dc when in the bath/shower? When washing myself I just use my hand, and have been using my hand to wash the dc. Is it more appropriate to use a flannel or sponge? They are too young yet to be able to wash themselves properly.

Flannel is really dirty. Otherwise just a rinse over.

Flannel if really dirty! The flannels are clean!

Hand for body, flannel for face and neck (teething baby...lots of dribble)

Hand, but they were both largely self-washing by 4yo (with the occasional help for very lucky faces, getting sticky remnants of plasters off etc.) I would feel odd hand washing my 6yo unless there was a reason eg broken leg, as it feels too babyish.

I find a sponge v useful for rinsing shampoo out of hair, though.

Mucky, not lucky. Though possibly if it was icecream...

Do you wash dirty bottoms etc with your hand?

No the bum would be wiped down if really dirty before they got in the bath

I have always used a sponge on my son. And myself. It was a soft baby bath sponge when he was newborn, or cotton balls. Now he's 3, I use a normal bath sponge on him and flannel for face, neck and behind ears. Replaced every few months. Hands don't do much... Confused

LittleRobots · 15/03/2015 23:25

Never use a sponge on myself or my kids.

I'm thinking I ought to wash mine in the morning with more than the quick flannel/wipe after breakfast to remove food if necesary. They used to be wetwiped often as babies but now they arent its just dawning on me a morning wash might be in order. Bath time we all jjust use hands...

Dc is still young so we use cotton wool pads but think id use sponge or flannel when older to prevent cheesy bits in those scrumptious fat rolls!

GoogleyEyes · 16/03/2015 09:27

Yes, I used my hand for bottoms, too as babies and toddlers. Made sure I could feel anything that needed an extra scrub, or rough bits that might need cream etc.

shattered77 · 16/03/2015 11:08

Yeah, I have always just used my hand to clean them but had one of those moments where I questioned myself and wondered if I should use a flannel or something. I can usually get my little boy to give his winkie a swish round, but the other day he said, "don't touch my winkie again mummy". I thought maybe time to get him to keep washing his winkie but me get a flannel for his smelly bottom. I'm usually quite matter of fact and don't even think about things like this!

DD is 6 months. Baby sponge (she likes warm water squeezed onto her) in the bath, soft flannels for wiping down top n tail.

NorahBone · 16/03/2015 23:20

I use a flannel for face and shower to rinse out shampoo, but just rely on his general splashing to get the rest of him clean, although if he's very sticky I might go at him with a flannel (1.5, so still very messy with food). He tends to spend quite a long time in the bath though as he loves it.

NorahBone · 16/03/2015 23:22

I used to use sponges but they get mouldy easily and don't cope with washing machines very well.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2015 23:24

Just used to use my hands. Started getting DS to wash his own "bits" at about 3, I did the rest - chest/back/tummy/arms/legs.

By 4 or 5 I was only doing his back and he did the rest without supervision. Now (6) he has showers and does it all himself, even his hair.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2015 23:25

WITH supervision. Not sure why I said without. I did hair too until he got used to the shower, then he wanted to do it alone.
