FTM paranoia Air Wrap cot bumper. Help!

Hi,

I posted a few days ago because my dd (9 weeks) kept sticking her arm out of her crib which was making her hard to settle because she likes to stuck her little first to soothe herself to sleep, so it was like the hokey cokey at bedtime!

It was recommended that we try the air wrap cot bumper, a mesh breathable thing. Tonight was our first night of use and i woke soaked from leaky bboobs, checked the time, 4am! She's slept 8 hours!! At this point i was convinced of the worst!

She is fine.

I've only used the bumper on one side of the crib where she always seems to lie, so one side is still open which should help even further with airflow. I know she slept with her face up against it all night and now I'm super paranoid that she slept so long for the wrong reasons.

Advice from the lullaby trust is not to use any sort of cot bumper, even mesh ones. I know one of the biggest concerns with any bumper is re-breathing. I.e. The baby re-breathes the same air which becomes lacking in oxygen and eventually suffocates!!

Am i being totally paranoid?

Did her better sleep just come from not getting her arm stuck and being able to self soothe?

She's always slept with her face right up against the moses basket and thats just cotton lined.

Aaaaarrgggh

Yep, you are being (understandably) paranoid. Don't worry about it though, she's your PFB Grin

Maybe it was not getting her arm stuck, maybe it was that she likes having something to mush her face against again.
I've worked with babies who spent a good 6 months with their faces mushed against the Air Wrap (and one who now at 2.4 still sleeps with his face pressed firmly into his mattress). It's just how they're most comfortable. Try and enjoy the extended sleep, it might not last!

We used one with our ds when he was 4 months. It was also around that time that he started sleeping through the night, it definitely helped massively as he'd started to roll. It does sound as though she just slept much better for not getting her arm stuck etc although I understand why you're worrying as she's still very young.

dd spent her formative weeks woth her face mashed into the mattress, she absolutely refused to sleep on her back or side and would scream for hours until she managed to fidget herself to the edge of the cot and flip herself onto her tummy at about 5 weeks. she then slept for 4 hours, did and slept for another 4 hours and has slept on her front ever since. it was scary as hell the first few nights but 18 months later she is a happy healthy toddler who still sleeps on her front woth her fash mashed into a cuddly toy/pillow/mattress

I don't use cot bumpers due to increased risk of sids. why don't you use a moses basket whilst she's little?

Katekoom · 15/03/2015 01:50

Shes already too big for the moses basket, she's a very long baby!

IME they sleep much better in a cot - maybe as it feels more secure and doesn't wobble around. When we took dd out of her moses basket a few weeks ago she immediately started sleeping much longer.
If you're nervous why not get a motion sensor? We have used the tommee tippee sensor pad with all three dc and it gives huge peace of mind when they want to sleep in non-recommended positions!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 15/03/2015 02:19

Ah I was the same OP, only used them for 2 nights then decided I nerves couldn't stand it! DD was in her Moses basket until 7 months though so had her face far more smushed up in there!

wheresthelight · 15/03/2015 07:56

O would have thought a moses basket with liners etc was a far bigger sids risk for rebreathing than a cot bumper! dd had her bumper from the time she first went into her cot and still has it on the headboard of her bed
