tell me about *normal* teething

i know its fairly usual for babies to get yucky nappies when theyre teething, but im finding it very hard to know whats what at the moment! Ds has cmp allergy, and is ebf. Im pretty sure hes also reacted to soya when ive had some. His nappies are generally still pretty yuck though, with mucous in them and hes been bothered with painful wind lately. Ive been eating a lot of eggs so could be that, but hes been showing signs of teething for a while. Are those normal teething symptoms? We're seeing the paed next week so ill talk over allergies then but i dont want to be making a fuss over teething! Equally dont want him to be in pain where its avoidable.

Watching with interest. dd is seeming to be struggling with teething at the moment and it feels like I am giving calbuprofen quite a lot. I am also wondering how long this goes on for!

I ended up with the rule that 'it's not teething even when it's teething' with my DH as its so hard to tell when it actually is teething and not something else.

Unless I can see the White of a tooth breaking through the surface I assume it's something else as I find its only the couple of days before the teeth breaks through the gum teething is really bad. May well be teething but stops me being complacent. Pulling on ear? May be teething may be ear infection.

Dd nappies are usually quite solid, so when they go back to runny that's a good indication for us along with being grizzly and not sleeping so well. Don't find they are particularly Green and frothy though, but she's not suffered with teething massively I'd say, but she only has 6.

Otoh My niece has had a terrible time with super runny nappies making her bottom so so sore, really miserable so experiences are very different.

I don't have a problem giving calpol etc whenever I think dd might benefit from it, but then I take paracetamol or ibuprofen even for mild headaches, I hate the thought dd is stiffening but can't tell me. Better safe than sorry.

Both of mine seem to get very acidic nappies a few days before a tooth. Very smelly and they will scream as they go because their skin is burning. Have to change them like greased lightening to prevent a rash. Even going upstairs for nappies and wipes can make them sore.

It's rotten for them. I sympathise.

I do agree with the poster who says everything is put down to teething and you need to be careful this assumption isn't masking something else.

I find mine will really want to chomp down on something to relieve the pain which makes me confident it is their teeth.

Littlef00t · 12/03/2015 09:13

Stiffening = suffering (sorry!)

Littlef00t · 12/03/2015 09:15

Ah yes the chomping. There is a little more of this before the teeth comes through, a little hand reaching out for a finger, less cute when it's bitten! She does like to bite more once the teeth are actually through for a couple of days too! Bf much less enjoyable then!

Teething can be a nightmare & affects all babies differently. My friends babies just seem to get a bit moany and then a tooth appears. But both of my dcs suffered terribly. They were really easy babies, apart from at teething time... Toxic smelling nappies, yes a bit mucus like, a constant stream of dribble, crazy high temperatures, snotty nose, and really unhappy - and this would be on & off for months until finally the damned tooth would appear.

Teething was such an pain in our house, that every friend that would have an issue with their baby, I'd be sure to suggest "teething" as the reason!

But happily it does pass :)

It is interesting to hear everyone's experience. I am also wandering into the camp of putting everything down to teething, but we do have a lot of chomping going on at the moment. Tooth number 2 has just come through but she still seems to be suffering Confused
