How much television does your toddler watch?

And what do you do all day if they don't watch any? My ds, 2.5 is an early riser so TV has become a necessity.

First child - none. She's 6 now and barely watches it but I have to sit through a bit of Frozen every now and then and she likes Bagpuss and the Clangers on DVD!

Second child (now 2 3/4) - a bit, because if older one is watching a DVD he watches too.

I really don't think kids under 3 should watch much at all - I found she was just as happy with a pile of toys (in playpen when little) or watching what I was doing.

This last week LOADS as we've had a sickness bug one after another...

On a nursery day-Prob 1 episode of something with his milk when he wakes up, then half an hour cuddled up with me on the sofa when we get home.

On a non nursery day/weekend. More than that-Prob an hour in the morning then an hour or two from now till bathtime at 6pm...

He's three next month-only watches CBeebies or occasional films.

Far too much according to the previous posters. He doesn't just sit and watch it thou, he's generally playing or pottering. I should probably really just turn it off but I don't.
He doesn't go to nursery, and some days we don't go out.
It's not on during tea or before bedtime.

They don't really. We don't own a TV at home so no tv there. Ds1 (5) is in reception and I think they use tv there sometimes, otherwise he and ds2 (3) just watch odd film at cinema or on planes ( probably once a month on average)

A typical day would involve a mixture of being at home and out. Roughly 10am-1pm out at say museum/ pool/ park/ bikes/ friends/ etc, then 3.30-5pm outside. In between they play at home or my office.

Only a little, maybe if I'm watching something when he wakes from his nap or if he's ill (1.5yo DS). In a normal day the tv is off, we go out of the house for a few hours in the morning, he has a nap after lunch. In between times he plays with his toys, 'helps' with jobs or is in his high chair eating.

My dd age 2.4 was watching half an hour a day while I cooked the evening meal but since ds was born she now watches about 90 mins over the whole day. I'm looking forward to warmer dryer weather and fewer breastfeeds!

KeturahLee · 09/03/2015 20:34

As much as they want really. Sometimes none, sometimes 2 or 3 movies in a day.

munchkinmaster · 09/03/2015 20:37

Mine watches 0-90 mins due to small baby.

But the early rising and tv watching is interesting. When baby was brand new and her dad was put in charge of mornings she shifted over the course of his paternity leave from getting up about 7:30 to about 6-6:30. Because he was letting her watch tv. A few days of cold turkey and she went back to rolling over at 6am as there was no longer any temptation to get up. Was 2.4 at that time

munchkinmaster · 09/03/2015 20:38

Oh and we go out every am and nap every pm. Tv goes on at 7 while I do dishes.

munchkinmaster · 09/03/2015 20:39

Obvs the toddler was watching cartoons with her dad, not the newborn who was watching the walking dead with me

BubblesInMyBath · 09/03/2015 20:41

None. I watch via my phone but we don't have a tv currebtly and I broke the laptop he did watch DVDs on. He copes fine with books and toys but he's the type of child who can entertain himself and not rip my house apart while I get on with things, I think it's only due to his temperament that I haven't invested in an actual tv

Fairylea · 09/03/2015 20:42

As much as he likes. He's 2.8 and we generally go out in the morning to a group or the park and then he has a nap and in the afternoon he plays with toys and whatever but generally we have the tv on as well on cbeebies in the background. He watches bits of it and sometimes he asks for specific programmes on iplayer (mainly bing or time for school) so I cast them onto the tv via chromecast.

I've given up worrying about tv. My eldest is 12 and has turned out absolutely fine and is sociable and bright and we have the tv on nearly all the time. I find it relaxing.

AGirlCalledBoB · 09/03/2015 20:42

He likes watching balamory after his lunch. It helps calm him down for his nap. Sometimes in the morning he will watch it as well.

More if i or he is ill. All he wants to do then is sit on the sofa.
