Washing a baby girls nappy area

Weird question as I should know how to do this being female myself, but how do you clean a baby girls 'bits' if you know what I mean! I have just been cleaning the outside but I noticed a build up of nappy cream in her bits and I'm worried it could cause an infection. Though I was always under the impression that area was 'self-cleaning' does anyone know the right way to wash a baby girls nappy area?

I'm sure your midwife/health visitor would be best placed to advise on this

Quick wipe with a baby wipe, any build up gently wiped away or washed off in the bath. Don't scrub around because you will make her sore.

Yes ask your HV.

I'm sure you aren't really wanting a troupe of Mums to talk about their little girls' nether regions on the Internet.

Yes, speak to your MW/HV, GP or practice nurse.

What flanja said. Your mw can show you.

Are you sure it is nappycream, we dont use cream but have noticed vaginal discharge build up some times, which I don't do anything about as it is as you say self cleaning.

eurochick · 10/03/2015 07:27

I think it is a perfectly reasonable question to ask and I know it was a discussion my AN group had in the early days.

Just wipe the outside bits and give the area a good swoosh in the bath. If there is excess discharge, speak to your GP.

Purple sudocrem is awful for doing it, and actually drying. Must be terribly itchy. Also very liquid bf poo gets mixed with it. Sad
As PP say, a gentle swoosh or wipe suffices to clear it but if you regularly use a thick/greaser cream when they're tiny it does build up.

MW and GP pointed out its self cleaning in adults or situations where the woman/girl isn't sat in liquid poo.

They suggested a very gentle rinse/wipe and use metanium or the lighter tube - style barrier creams only.

Thank you everyone. I guess it will naturally come away at bath time most of the time. She was late so had very dry skin so has only been bathing once a week at the moment and top and tail the rest of the time. Her skin is settling down now so will up the baths and hopefully that will solve the problem.
