Train set recommendation for 1-2 year old

My parents want to buy my DS a train set for his first birthday... Totally on the understanding that he's a little bit too young for it now but over this year he'll hopefully get into it... Any recommendations of one that's great for little ones but will keep him happy for some time to come?! TIA.

Tesco sell a wooden one for £12 (£25 for larger set) that is compatible with brio etc. really good buy - my DD has been playing with it for 2 years now.

All the wooden ones are fab. Brio is expensive but they all fit together (sometimes a bit of jiggling is needed if it's the ikea set).

I like the Big Jigs stuff. It's well made, lots of choices and not too expensive.

vtech toot toot stuff is good

We had a combination of Ikea and Brio stuff that DS (8 this week) has only very recently conceded he doesn't play with much any longer. Fantastic value for money

Argos have Chad Valley train sets at 2 sets for £15 at the moment. We have Brio put away for when DS is a bit older but we're letting him play with the Chad Valley stuff now as it doesn't matter if he damages it. It's definitely not as good quality as Brio or BigJigs but it's good as a cheap practice set until he learns how to play with them.

Ikea is still going strong in this household after 9 years....

I agree that brio (or ikea) is great! The brio trains don't go under the ikea bridges which can be a bit of a disappointment but we tend to just not build tracks under those tunnels.

My ds was playing with his brio/ikea track by himself by 18 months, it's the best toy in my opinion!

If you have Duplo then the Duplo one is excellent. My DCs played with it for years and as it attaches to the bricks you can build all kinds of bridges/station buildings to go with it.

You can also pick up sets/extras on ebay easily.

Brio/own brand brio here, it's the toy Ds plays with the most, and has done since he was about 1yr old. It's currently across our entire living room floor...!

We started with the Tesco set for my eldest and gave added to it with Bigjigs for my twins. Bigjigs have lots of lovely additions and my dts (2.5) it just obsessed with his train set at the moment. Well worth it.
