Do parents still use reins for kidsto prevent them running off or as these seem as unacceptable these days? Does anyone know of any good ones/nice ones etc? Thank you! Grin

This thread is a bit old now, so if you have landed here looking for recommendations, we have recently updated our guide to the best toddler reins with products tried, tested and recommended by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

How do you misuse reins then?

Also, my problem with reins is that they control speed but not direction. If someone could invent something to force a three year old to walk in the right direction in a straight line I'd be grateful.

Yes, I've used them for my now 8.5 year old and my now 2 year old.

Eldest preferred a wrist strap and youngest prefers her Little Life Nemo backpack.

I'd rather they were safe than under a truck.

I still taught them that they should hold hands beside/on roads but I like that it gives them a bit of freedom with a back up. I also think that long walks with your hand in the air must be uncomfortable hence the not holding hands unless necessary.

Assessment you need one of those solid harness things that guide dogs wear, I imagine it'd be like steering a smart trike :o

I have once or twice seen a parent dragging a child around with reins. Also a parent using them on a v early walking baby, but kind of bouncing them rather than letting them walk so they were uncomfortable suspended. I guess that's what I meant by misuse, I suppose.

Dd hated the reins. She used to strain against it - think she took it as some sort of challenge. I plan to introduce them early to ds and persist with using them. Hopefully he won't be as quick as she was!

When my twins were toddlers someone lent me some reins. First time we used them I thought we would walk to a friends in the next street. As we walked on the pavement, one twin went one way, the other twin went the other way! I didn't use them again!

We use reins. We've got Lindam ones that we bought in Tesco. DS1 (3.7 yrs) is just getting to the stage where he's starting to grow out of them, and DS2 (18 months) wears reins if he's toddling around when we're out and about.

I couldn't care less if other people think it's unacceptable to use them. I use them because I want to keep my DC safe around roads, and a young toddler has no road sense at all.

I was going to get normal reins, but got a LittleLife backpack on offer and I'm very chuffed with it. It's got a little handle so you can grab the bag easily and a hood that tucks away, but most importantly he looks pretty darn adorable Grin
It's this one.
