high chair/child chair

Looking at options for a high chair for PFB. I notice that some convert into a table and chair for an older child. The idea of having a multipurpose piece of furniture appeals to me as our flat is small. But I am wondering if it is necessary.

Can someone tell me what age a child will need to use a high chair until? And what age does a child start to need a child size table and chair for activities like drawing?

My dad is 2 this month and still uses a high chair (ikea antilop £16 and brilliant) she is a climber so needs strapping in.
She has been using a little table / chair in her play room since she was just over 1

Both my children moved to an adilt chair at about 2.5.

Dd is 23 months and hasn't been in a high chair or booster at the table for a month or 2 now as she had epic tantrums about being strapped in and she wanted to sit like mummy and daddy.
She's had a small table and chairs in the living room for playing drawing and the occasional meal for nearly a year now.

We brought a wooden east coast for ds1 that eventual converts to a stall n can be used til 12yrs well it's never got that far as from 2yrs old he has wanted to sit on adult chair. Ds 2 will have use of it in a few mths.

I liked it went with our furniture as we had a lounge dining room at time n could take tray off n push right up to table.

Cost £75 plus £20 for a padded insert.

Our dd outgrew her triptrap at about 2- like pps, she was adamant she wanted to sit on a grown up chair. We don't have a child table and chairs- DC have always done everything at the kitchen table. We already have enough clutter furniture.
Triptraps are pricey (ours was a hand me down) but brilliant as you can push them right up to the table and they're fairly compact.

We also had an Antilop (can be dismantled easily and flung in the boot to take to grandad's house!), and pfb used it until about 2 when he wanted to be like mummy and daddy. He used to sit on a cushion, didn't fall off, despite being a wriggler.

He also has mini-table and two chairs but has never shown any interest in using the buggers Hmm

Tried high chair into table and chair at relative house and it was terrible! Far too big and slippy, stupid cracks to trap food.

If space is a premium, I'd rate the chicco booster with tray or antilop ikea high chair.

Bolshybookworm · 06/03/2015 12:59

If we hadn't been given a triptrap, I'd have bought an antilop. It's a fantastic piece of design- so easy to clean!

We use the Hauck version of the TRipp-Trapp, only £40 and she has been in it since 7 months. It comes with a little lip to start with to hold the child in (you have to buy some straps separately,£6) and then when they are able to just sit on the chair you can take the lip off and the chair is just the right height for the table. It should last her until she is 6/7 years.
We bought it because we live in a smallish house and didn't want an awkward shaped high chair taking up space.

We have the ikea one too and ds was in it until well past 2 years. We had to stop using it as he could get his knees up and would get stuck. It's an ongoing issue as he's too short for an adult chair really and kneels up but slides around. I can't believe there aren't more junior chairs easily available.

His ikea table and chairs have been in regular use since he was around 2 - but the chairs are starting to fall apart so I need something else now.

gallicgirl · 06/03/2015 18:40

We used antilop when DD was smaller, perhaps until she was 3 or so.
We also bought a Babydan from eBay, costs about £60 new I think. This has been brilliant now she doesn't need the support. However at 4 she's still not quite big enough for an adult chair so the Babydan is perfect as it's adjustable.

kavv0809 · 06/03/2015 18:49

We had a converting one I bought second hand and dd used it til about 2.5. We found it pretty useful for drawing etc aswell as mealtimes.

A small word of caution about the antilops. Because the legs splay out it is possible to catch your foot in it walking past. I witnessed a truly horrific moment in a cafe which was tight for space, someone trying to squeeze by caught their foot on the leg, he tripped and the whole chair basically collapsed, the little lad in the chair fell to the floor and hit the back of his head. He was ok thank god but I have never looked at them in quite the same way since.

We have the east coast folding wooden chair from john Lewis for our titchy house, it folds really small and is pretty compact when out too. They have them in the john Lewis cafe where I live so you could try it out.

The only problem is the tray has pretty low sides.
