Blood pressure problems- scared!

Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone has had the same issues as me and can put my mind at rest.

I'm on 400mg twice a day of Labetalol. Was on labetalol since the middle of pregnancy about a year ago and had does upped and upped until now. Six months ago my BP was fine and I had hoped to come off it now, but I've just had my checks and it is so high that they're putting me on another drug as well as the Labetalol :-(

I am really sad- I thought I'd be coming off it now, not going on to more drugs. I don't know what the new ones are- I have to collect them later. I am terrified that i'm on the verge of a stroke or something, and that if these new ones don't work they'll send me to hospital or something. is there anyone that can put my mind at rest? Has anyone been on such a high does of Labetalol and found that it stopped working?

I am overweight but I don't know if that's the reason my BP is so unstable. It was OK before pregnancy.

I don't know anything about the drugs you mention, and am not a medical person.

But, I have had some 'blips' with high blood pressure. Losing weight has helped me significantly along with doing some regular exercise (a couple of times a week - nothing too extreme). Also don't smoke, drink sparingly, and limit your salt intake. Those are all things you can do that should work in your favour.

to clarify: drink alcohol sparingly

I have high blood pressure. It was controlled in pregnancy by labetalol but kept going up and I was put onto another drug as well. I was told that labetalol is not a great drug but is one of the few that's OK to use during pregnancy so that's the only time they use it - if you're no longer pregnant maybe ask if there's a better choice for you? I only know what I've been told though, am not a medical professional!

My BP is very high when monitored in a clinic but comes out as only slightly high if I do daily morning and evening checks and take an average. I've also had 24 hour blood pressure monitoring which also shows that my BP is only slightly high so clearly I suffer badly from "whitecoat syndrome". I've lost loads of weight and have a good lifestyle so they're checking me over for other causes but otherwise have said it probably won't be an issue for a while - no strokes imminent!

My GP does blood tests regularly and sends me to get my eyes checked etc to make sure that it isn't affecting any organs (hasn't yet).

Thanks to both of you. I feel so depressed about. I was so sure it would all be OK by now. How did you lose weight (like, did you follow a programme or just do it by yourself?). I have been trying to lose wieght for years now...

To lose weight, I joined the low-carb threads on Mumsnet and found them to be hugely helpful and supportive. Biwi and Sayra are the Mumsnetters who are 'in charge'.

I lost weight by exercising tbh. I am terrible at controlling food intake but I'm loads better if I'm exercising regularly. And it burns calories obviously. I do lots of heavy weights too, which is generally good for weight loss. It has taken a while, slow and steady, but has been a lifestyle change. I've still got a bit of a way to go but definitely getting there!

I know it is easier said than done but worrying isn't going to help your blood pressure.

I am not a medical person so don't know about drugs stopping working. Has anything happen in your life that could be causing stress and thus causing your blood pressure to go up. It might be seem insignificant but could be a cause.

Second the losing weight. My DH is on numerous tablets after a heart attack. The medical staff are forever going on about weight loss
