Toilet troubles two weeks old!

In desperate need of help! My 2 week old daughter is having trouble passing stools, she's done two in the last 5 days. She's mixed feeding and I've spoken to both midwife & health visitor and all I'm getting is give her boiled water or get the liquid milk rather than the formula powder. Tried both and still nothing and it is really worrying me now because I know she wants to go and she can't because it causes her to cry.

Try some gentle exercises like bicycle legs. YouTube is great for examples to help.

Hope things improve soon!

Baby massage can help see here www.babycentre.co.uk/a1042915/massaging-your-baby or you tube like previous poster suggested

Also try different formula - my hv advised aptamil as being easy to digest

Also google baby massage. There is one you do in clockwise movements on their little tummies that helps with wind and constipation.

Yes to Aptimil, if you're using SMA it's well known for causing constipation problems.

You can also try fennel tea. I was am au pair in Europe and it's widely used there from birth as it's good for the digestion. My DS has had it since birth whenever he's had any problems. You can also try adding a little soft brown sugar, or a few drops of orange juice to the cooled boiled water.

If you're worried then just go to see your GP. They really won't mind seeing such a young baby for this.

I'd be back onto the mw to be honest. Is she having plenty of wet nappies? Are her poos runny, soft and yellowish when they come?? Sorry but Fennel tea etc aren't recommended, for such a tiny baby they should only have breast milk or formula.

McFox · 05/03/2015 11:07

Nicky, fennel tea is absolutely fine for babies. The recommendation is that they just need breast milk or formula, but if the baby is in pain, them yes midwives/HVs will suggest other things such as water and tea. I'd rather give a baby one of these options than see them in pain, and as long as the amounts don't interfere with the recommended milk intake, it's not an issue.

I work in healthcare btw and formerly childcare, I would not give advice on threads such as this otherwise.

Waffles80 · 05/03/2015 20:58

If avoid anything other than formula or breastmilk unless otherwise advised by a GP. I don't really trust HVs hugely as some advice is outdated.

Agree with bicycle legs etc above - it helped my babies.

squizita · 05/03/2015 21:31

My HV, GP, specialist midwife and breastfeeding counsellor all stressed not to give water or tea. It's a popular home remedy within some communities in my area hence I think they tell everyone.

They don't know each other - based on that (separate experts all saying the same) personally I would be wary of giving anything bar baby milk and maybe just boiled cooled water for a ff baby.

Baby massage and bicycle legs work ... also the vibrate setting on a bouncy chair can work wonders.

I saw one Dr with DD who told us to give her orange juice. Spoke to a friend who is a Dr and they pulled a face. Go figure.

I'd be back on the phone to the midwives personally
