When do toddlers start understanding reward charts?

I picked up a reward chart at the post office a few days ago - just a simple one with smiley Stickers. I am wondering whether to start using it, or when. DS is now 19 months old, so probably a bit to Young to properly understand the concept.

I was thinking of using it when he eats well (i.e. tries something new, doesn't throw food on the floor...). I think he could get really excited about stickers, but whether he would necessarily make the link to preceding good behaviour is another question....

Any experiences?

My husband just asked me to specify that the reward chart is indeed for the child, not for the husband.

Although... giving me thoughts now :--))...

No idea but I'm intrigued. I doubt my 2yo would make the link. Hopefully some pearls of wisdom will land and let us know.

19m is way, way too young to have a reward chart for trying new food or not throwing food. Trying new food should be its' own reward and natural, don't make a thing of it, it will be counter productive.

You don't need a chart for these things: save it for one specific thing that has become an issue, e.g staying in bed after lights out, aged 3.5.

I agree with pp. Don't use them until you have to... much better to be intrinsically motivated to be good (because it pleases him) than always looking to please others/get rewards. Not something I'd encourage from so young.

Google Alfie Kohn before you make any decisions - unconditional parenting and punished by rewards are rather interesting reads.
