Help DD has sores on nappy rash

DD is 12 weeks old and has had Nappy rash for the first time in the last 4 days. I use natures choice environmental disposals so no chemicals in them. I've been changing her every 2 hours and when wet or poohed in between. When we're not at home. When I'm at home I've been leaving her exposed to the air and it's getting worse. When we're at home i use cotton wool and water and not wipes. It' getting worse now and tonight there are small sores. Anyone any suggestions? She is usually happy and contented and has been screaming all evening (I really thnk it's the nappy rash that's causing her to be so upset.)

Metanium is fab on nappy rash but the sores suggest it could be thrush may need to let your GP see it

I've been using metanium, initially it seemed to help but not any more. Will call GP in morning thanks.

Make sure you dry her extremely well after using cotton wool and water, or even better stop using water and use a baby lotion on cotton wool to clean her with.

Whilst sores are there i would put a barrier cream on such as vaseline or similar.

Fingers crossed you'll get a docs appt for tomorrow!

Thanks will use baby lotion from now on. haven't got any vasiline will get some first thing. GP is usually really good they'll see babies if you're prepared to wait till end of surgury if it's not urgent.

For really bad nappy rash you can paint on egg white and then leave nappy free for a while. Very old remedy but one that I have seen applauded on MN too!
No experience myself as both mine in cloth so no rash....
BTW could it be teething as I think that for some reason this can make their bums really sore?

loopybear · 24/10/2006 22:44

She is dribbling alot and biting her hands so might be teething. If I have another I'm going to use cloth natures choice is ok cos no chemicals and breakdown in 150 days. I read about egg whites and camamile tea, am willing to give anything ago to help DD

Let me know how you go with egg white.
BTW why not try cloth now and save yourself some cash as they'll do for subsequent babies too. My nappies are on bum number 4 (only 2 were mine so have passed on to pregnant friend now!).
Hope that little bottom is better soon.

BTW don't go on dribbling and chewing hands as sign of teething as all babies do that anyway. Mine did and DD1 was a year before she got a tooth. DD2 went thru this stage and is now 7 months with no teeth at all but has at least stopped dribbling.

My ds gets nr with sores even in cloth nappies when he's teething badly - but disposables are worse than cloth at making him worse.

I also think he's allergic to lanolin (I am) which counts a lot of creams out. The only combination that really seems to do any good for him (given the lanolin problem) is Camilosan Cream (the ointment doesn't work for him) with a zinc and caster oil cream applied liberally on top. This, together with regular changing (which you are obviously doing anyway) keeps on top of it and it does eventually clear up.

The teething does seem to be connected with the problem - we're having another session at the moment as he gets his molars through (18m). He definitely started teething at 3m, but didn't get first tooth until 6.5m - hope that you don't have to wait so long

Best of luck!
