How did your DC's start with chicken pox?

My DS goes to nursery and one of his friends has just got chicken pox.

My DS is currently in bed with a cough and red cheeks. I'm not sure if this is the start or do they just start with spots straight away? Do they feel ill to start off with? I checked for any spots while in the bath but no spots. Would like to hear anybody's experiences.

TIA

Mine were generally unwell the week before: temp, grumpy, lethargic. Got to the point I was taking him to the dr, then the spots came out.

it started off with them being hot, bothered and under the weather. temp stayed high for about 4 days, spots started pinging out from days 2-5. then a few more days to recover.

Both of mine have had it twice.

Ah. My two both had coughs and a temperature a day or two before coming out with any spots. I think it often starts that way. Sorry! If they do have it, get down to Boots and buy PoxClin, it's brilliant!

One of mine had a temp, was grumpy & lethargic, the day she came out in spots. Still well enough to have sent her to school though, only came on in the evening.

The other had a slight temp the day before she had spots but nowt else.

Oh dear! It certainly seems as though he's going to get it then. My DD is only 9 weeks bless her I don't think that will be nice. Will get to boots if he does have it! Thanks singsong

The incubation period is something like 10-21 days. It's highly infectious, if you're not immune and are in the same room as someone with the symptoms, or someone whose symptoms appear the following day, it's very unlikely you won't get it. The NHS website explains this clearly.

So we knew DS would get it, and 2 weeks after his friend had it, it started with a spot on his face. Within hours there were spots on his torso, just small pinpricks. By the next day he was covered (but not arms and legs, that's typical of chicken pox). He also had a fever, no appetite, and wanted to be held all day. He was only 11 months old, it was heartbreaking!

Oh dear, just seen '9 weeks'. The general advice is not to go to the doctors as it's so higly infectious, and vulnerable people tend to hang out there! But with a newborn I would ring 111, as a fever in little ones can be a bit more serious. You'll need calpol to bring the fever down. We used Virasoothe on the spots and he didn't seem itchy at all.

the gp agreed to a home visit when dd was really poorly. There was no way she could seen in public, the poor little bean looked like a lepe. Sad .

Virasoothe pretty much stopped the itching. fab stuff and worth the money.

leper.

get some soft food in because they won't feel like eating if they have lots of throat spots. ice lollies help to cool them down too.

Thankyou everyone. I have just been to check and he feels hot and is in such a deep sleep which is unusual for him he's usually a really light sleeper.

He also has tiny spots on his cheek but he does often get heat rash. Newborn seems fine so far but will call 111 If she does get a temp. They obviously will get the virus though. Thinking about it meglet he's not eaten much all day. Bless, it must be horrible to get them when they're so young and don't understand im dreading my DD getting them im sure I'll be able to reason with DS and im sure he'll love all the ice lollies!
