How many new clothes did you buy for your second if they were close in age to your first?

Am due DD2 in five weeks. We've not bought her any clothes yet because we're probably going to rely heavily on DD1s stuff. There will be 23 months between them and I'm not sure what the norm is for getting new stuff. DD1 had soooo many clothes there's loads that were never used or only worn once so obviously we're going to use those more of we can.

So how much new stuff did you buy?

There will be 20 months between DD1 and DD2 so hoping to buy as little as possible. Problem is DD1 was born in November and DD2 will be July so a lot of stuff won't be suitable due to the seasons. I plan to buy some short sleeved vests and rompers for number 2, that's about it. DD1 was in sleepsuits until about 4 months anyway so can't imagine needing any outfits for DD2.

I don't think the age gap is relevant. DC2 will arrive when DD is 3.8, and I'm hoping to reuse as much as humanly possible. Of course if this one is a boy I'll probably avoid dressing him in her pink clothes, but the pink Grobags are definitely being used again!

I think the age gap is relevant when they are older though.

With 3 years age gap, when my older one outgrows something it often gets passed straight to the younger one (OK, it's sometimes a little big). If there was a smaller gap, I can imagine they might both fit into the same size at the same time, and it would be harder to hand things down.

I've only got the one, and he wore very little new stuff at all when he was a baby and small child, as there were bags of clothes doing the rounds - as soon as yours outgrew it, you passed it on!

Now he's older he gets new stuff, as teens wreck clothes, but he still gets some hand me downs from older friends.

13 months, two boys. I bought some premie-sized onesies for my tiny DS2 and that was about it.

gutzgutz · 23/02/2015 14:57

My youngest wears 3rd time around clothes: having gone through DS1 and DN1! DN2 wears 4th time around clothes unless they are completely trashed. I'm hoping to get away with this as long as possible because there will come a time when they will refuse.... With the difference in seasons, I find a long sleeved vest under a t shirt works well.

Spend the money on days out and activities instead!

Thank you all! We've looked at getting new sleepsuits and outfits but so many of DD1s things will work well too.

I think I just got spooked by some RL people saying 'oh she'll need all her own stuff - she can't be expected to wear everything DD1 wore...'. Hmm

25 months between my boys and we reused everything. Ds1 had worn out some trousers with crawling so we bought some new trousers in 12-18 months think that was about it! Was so lovely to get all the favourites out again as they get so little wear out of them when they're teeny. DS2 is catching up in size now though.....

Highlandbird · 24/02/2015 16:36

Oh and you'll find that people will buy presents of new clothes anyway so you probably will have some new stuff!
