Silly question about boiled water

SallyMischievo · 22/02/2015 17:24

I want to give 10 week old DD cooled down boiled water in a bottle to try to help her tummy but it has now cooled down too cold! Can I add hot boiled water to make it lukewarm?!

What's wrong with her tummy? water isn't really required before starting solid foods

BMO · 22/02/2015 17:32

I don't see why not, but water isn't really a good idea for very young babies.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 22/02/2015 17:36

No reason why not but giving a baby water so young isn't usually recommended as it fills them up without getting any nutrients. What's the problem with her tummy?

She has been very colicky the last few days, pulling her legs up, arching her back and thrashing her arms about and seems to have a windy tummy. One of my NCT friends said her HV had suggested lukewarm boiled water could help to settle a scrambled tummy so I thought it worth a try? Happy to be corrected if not a wise idea!

Have you tried infacol before feeds? This helped our very colicky/windy baby.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 22/02/2015 17:44

Also have a look at baby massage techniques for wind.

SallyMischievo · 22/02/2015 17:46

Have tried Infacol then switched to gripe water as no noticeable difference. Thank you for the tip though!

Water is a rather odd suggestion tbh. is she bf or ff?

SallyMischievo · 22/02/2015 22:01

BF. Have abandoned water idea, thought it sounded a bit strange but DD is in such discomfort I wondered if it was worth a try. DP is now suggesting we should FF as evidently my breast milk is not agreeing with her Sad Starting to think he might be right?

Sorry to be blunt, but your husband is talking bollocks.

dementedpixie · 22/02/2015 22:05

of course he isn't right! It could be reflux symptoms or maybe a growth spurt.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 22/02/2015 22:06

Has she struggled with wind in the past?

CultureSucksDownWords · 22/02/2015 22:06

Your DP is not being helpful with that suggestion, it's completely wrong. Formula is not a solution to digestive upset and in fact it is harder to digest than breastmilk. Please don't give his comment any credence.

It's not uncommon behaviour that your DD is showing. Have you tried all the usual tummy massage/leg cycling etc?

AntiHop · 22/02/2015 22:11

No. Ff is not the answer. Colic is one of those nasty things that you just have to ride out. Do not give her water. Speak to your health visitor rather than getting second hand advice.

Try to keep the baby upright after each feed for at least 10 mins to help with wind. Consider carrying her in a sling when you're at home or out and about as keeping her upright will also help with wind. Find your local sling meet or sling library to get help with choosing and using a sling.

At some point colic just suddenly stops.

There's HVs that suggest giving them water and there's HVs that don't suggest giving them water. I'm just going to say that my mum had 5 kids, gave us water if we were looking a bit yellow or windy. None of us had colic.
I don't know why HV/midwives don't recommend it anymore (old-fashioned remedies are sometimes better), I mean it's good for a little "clean out" for them. But like the others say, it does fill them up. So if you're going to give her water, give her little amounts.

Genevieve1976 · 23/02/2015 01:34

I have a six week old that struggles with his tummy, and constipated. Both health visitor and my mid wives have said cooled boiled water in addition to normal feeds to help his digestive system. It works everytime so do what works for you and your little one. X

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 23/02/2015 08:52

It isn't recommended because it won't do anything! Very small amounts are unlikely to harm a baby this age (as compared to a tiny newborn, where even small amounts can replace quite a big percentage of a milk feed). But it isn't going to help. There is water in bm or formula, and it's all going to mix together in their stomach. It can't possibly do anything.

Generations ago mums were advised to give water between the strictly timed intervals for milk feed (3-4 hours). This often filled tummies, helped the babies to 'last' until the next feed and therefore seemed to help with the diagnosis of wind/colic/whatever. In fact, it was generally hunger. That advice has lingered far longer than the feeding schedules.

FF babies sometimes need water, but bf babies shouldn't if you feed on demand. Your milk will adjust to give them all the water they need.

My ds went through a short phase of this at around this age. Pulling his knees up, grumbling and wriggling around. I was told that it's quite common as their little guts just develop. Colic tend to be lots and lots of screamy crying and constipation is no very hard small poo (like a rabbits!), is she show either of these symptoms? If not it could just be normal gut development. Have you tried Infacol?- Remember that it's cumulative so you need to use it before every feed. Good luck-it's awful when they're unsettled and you're trying to guess why.
